Hello All,

I was wondering what the most DURABLE blank media is out there.
Most of the discussions revolving around blank media usually deal with the efficieny.. the no. of successful burns etc.

I used to use blank Compusa DVD-R that were repackeged from a brand called PRINCO. I never had any problems with my burn success rate. But after a year or so .. I see that a lot of these DVD's have deteriorated ... and keep skipping when I play them.

I've read about the kind of dye etc used while making a blank has to a lot to do with their durability in the long run. I'm not sure what other factors have to be taken into consideration while deciding how durable a blank media is... but I was wondering what the consensus out there is about the most DURABLE blank media out there.

I've heard some good things about Philips and TDK. Most people are conflicted about Verbatim.. and Memorex usually gets a thumbs down.. And other comments about the durability of brands ?

I've just upgraded to a plextor PX-740UF Burner in case that has any bearing

Thanks !

Most of the discs that are available nowadays haven't been around long enough to accurately determine their longevity, but if it is improved over the stuff I purchased in the late 90's it should last a while

I purchased some Pioneer (PVC001001) discs back when they cost more than $5 each and over 95% still play very well

Not here you haven't. Both have a bad reputation for buying their media from cmc magnetics which is complete garbage and in the same catagory as those princo's. Even the TDK's that are actually made by TDK and have their mid code are not recommended.

Verbatim and memorex should never be used in the same sentence unless comparing really good to really bad. Verbatim is class A and one of the best medias available whereas memorex buys their media from an assortment of manufactures most of which are bad and include cmc mag and infodisc. With memorex you never know what you are going to get. CMC Mag and princo are both well known for poor longivity due to dye deterioration.

Recommended medias are verbatim, taiyo yuden, maxell, sony, and fuji made in japan. Branded ritek ridata's are also good class B or budget media.

or you could simply get some GENUINE Taiyo Yudens and you can put all your Princo worries, label questions to rest~ :)

IMHO, for CONSISTENCY of burns, longevity and the least amount of dye deterioration, Taiyo Yuden will serve it's purpose WELL for you...whether TYs are the "best", again, depends who you ask and how much success/experience they've had with them ON THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL setups/drives...results will naturally vary...don't know wHerE you read bout "good qualities" of Philips or TDK, but if you ask me, someone who HAS used both those brands in the past (ie. both Philips and TDK's own manufactured/coded media), they are FAR from being considered "decent"~ :)

Come on now Doc ... You know as well as I do that TDK discs are pretty darn good ~ good for hanging in the old cherry tree to keep those darn birds from hacking the fruit all to pieces ...

too bad my cherry tree was chopped down LONG ago and is now a stump in the ground~ LOL

TDK's own media will NEVER be praised by me...NEVER! "fruits of my labor" do not include "TT" coded media~ :) unless of course you count "rotten fruit" in that lil basket full of joy~ :)

I'm on my 3rd 50 x spindle of TDK and have found them pretty good. I used to print onto Riteks but found a lot of them started to fail (freeze up)even ones I hadn't printed on. I found a list some time ago nominating top brands:
TDK

I have come to the conclusion that a good burn depends on a lot of factors I.E. burner/media/print ink/burn speed, so I guess results vary for different people.
I don't print on them at all now, not worth the risk.

i'm glad you are having success with TDK, but that "list" you referred to is from the OUTDATED digitalfaq website~ :)

some users will have success with TDK, others (like me and many others will NOT) :P

TDK would be the LAST discs i would recommend, but if they work for you, all the power to ya~ :)

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies.

I've used Black Verbatim CD's and they were simply awesome. They had this duralife thing.. and they had a vinyl top. I've always had good experiences with Maxell and Verbatim as far as blank CD's go. They put up with a bit of abuse even and still play without skipping even 2 years after I first burnt them.

I was looking for something with the same kind of longevity, durability and reliability as those brands.. only for blank Dvds.

I'm gonna test run some Verbatims...

Keep your feedback coming. I think this is a useful discussion.. and I couldn't find anything else on it on afterdawn.
