Ok.... old subject new spin! I have come from another thread and was told to keep my writing speed to the MAX. Since I joined here I, it was drummed into me that I should burn at a safe speed of half the disc rate (16x burn no more than 8x for video). I usually burn at 4x but can burn higher all the way up to 16x! Is there something new to this that I don't or haven't heard about? Did other members change their settings to burn at max, now? I want to be kept up to speed so please give opinions. enlighten me. thanks

The only way I go 16x is on the sony +1x-8x yuden000-T02 which will do 16x on all 3 of my benqs, and the +16x verbatim MCC-004 media. This is some top notch stuff, and I'd feel safe at 16x. Still scary. I'm up to 12x on those MCC-004 verbs and they scan a heck of a lot better than 4x! 2.4x speed no more. Too many errors-crc to be exact. Everything I do is at least 8x,but I use some very good quality media. Some Office Depot +16x ricohjpn-r03 seemed to be ok at 8x. I haven't tried any at 12x or 16x.

I believe it's burner quality that is the contributor to the faster burning. Take a look at this site that catfreak posted in the 16x speed thread:

http://www.best16xburn.com/

It's basically down to quality, of the burner drive and media.Latest fw update may be in order as well to help the write strategy. I wouldn't dare burn a 16x cmag at 16x.

IHoe, what you want to do is scan your backups for errors. Test out certain MID coded media at various burn speeds. Go with the speed that produces the fewest errors-per MID code. Use dvdinfopro/nero speed test/k-probe/plextools-whichever your burner will allow the tests to be performed.

I just noticed you have the Philips 8631. There's a huge thread in the DVD-RW drives forum and a lot of unhappy campers with that drive. Did you get a hold of one of the few good 8631 drives?

yes I got one of the good 8631s... check out my collection in my sig! I'm a very happy burner! And I only use Taiyo Yuden white inkjet hub printables, Shiny Silver Printables or just the Shiny silvers! Only Taiyo Yuden for me...... I do have RWs.... but hardly have the use for them (50-Sony DVD+RWs). I used to burn at 12x but cut it down cause everyone was telling me to!!! I'll test out my burns..... but why should I if all of them work so great with my players??? are you telling me that there are more write errors with slower burning? hmmmmmmm now the impression I got last April has changed to speed up my burning speeds!!!"?? I'll test my results.

@Saugmon.....I just did a Nero Quality test and got a score of 99.... the disc was burned at 4X ..... now I am going to burn a movie at 8X and test again! If the quality mark goes down.... then I know to keep it at 4x! If I get a higher score or the same score I will bump it up to 12X then try 16x...... sooooo I guess I'll seeeeee!

my LG 4163B & 4167B can only manage 4x so that's where i stay, however have my eyes peeled for some Benq 1650's or whichever drives can do better than the LG's

.... so, creaky's gonna convert to a BenQ ... good for you, you won't regret it ...

The ONLY people who don't feel that the Philips chipped BenQs are the best are the Plextor people who have never tryed the BenQ .. I have a PlextorPX712a (Sanyo chip) which does a better job with CDs but the BenQ dusts it in DVD burn quality ...

If you can find a Philips DVDR1648P over there in the UK, creaky ... you'll like it .. it's virtually the same as the BenQDW1640 and can be cross-flashed with awesome results ... **drool, drool**

ok..... just did a couple of more movie..... ripped with DVDD and then encoded with DVD-RB with CCE...... burned with CopyToDVD at 3 dif speeds....... 4x & 8x burns came out with a disc quality of 99 using Taiyo Yuden Shiny Silver pritables DV+Rs,8x. Then burned same disc at 12x and got a 98 score! Now will try 16x ...... keep in mind all the discs are of different movies but the same programs doing them! the 4x movie was HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, the 8x movie was THE CUTTER, and the 12x movie was GARDEN STATE. The test was done with Nero Speed Disc Quality Test. Soooo far it's seems that the less errors came from 4x but 8x showed a few more than the 4x movie but not enough to make the disc quality lower than 99! 12x movie show more PI errors and dropped quality score to 98..... still a good score. nowwwwww onto 16x.

I think you should burn as fast as you can. If you have problems, slow down by all means, but if you can burn a good disc at 12x or 16x then you'd be crazy not to.

well...... the 16x quality test results are in....... at 45% done it dropped from a score of 100 to 99..... at 59% done it dropped again to 98 and at 65% done it dropped again to 97 score! the PI errors are adding up and 78% the score dropped to 95! Final result is a quality score of 95, the lowest result of all the speed tests with the most amount of PI errors. Sooooooo as for me..... I'll stay at 4x-8x range for best results using my Taiyo Yuden discs!

I recommended burning at max speed but I did NOT endorse 'overburning'

my problem with the speed is that i do so many burns that i have no time or interest to verify/scan/or whatever, so if i have a problem with one or all it could be ages before i know about it, so for me i'd rather stick to what works.

For instance for a few days (and a few more to come!) i'm finally ridding my collection of the appalling and crap FAKE Bulkpaq Orange discs by re-ripping from originals (yay what an incredibly boring task as there were about 500 of them) as nearly all of the Orange discs were uncopyable, even some of the ones that were recopyable/watchable only recently. Back when i was burning all the Orange discs i did 4x and 8x (100% burns virtually every single disc) but didn't know the dye in the discs was liquified McDonalds Chicken Nuggets so forever more will be untrustworthy of dvd burning; what i mean is that even though i only use top notch media now i'm very suspicious of dvd burning and won't take chances, otherwise i'll end up reburning far too many discs again!.

..now if i could trust the burn programs to flag a problem whenever they should i could go faster/try more brands of media and not look back. ..ie in my experience discs that skip/freeze always have corruption (CRC errors) on the disc. Now this is what really pisses me off about DVD burning. Established programs such as Nero should be, by now, able to burn a movie and warn you if it has corruption during/after the burn ie NOT to say 'completed successfully' and you only know if it's a decent burn by watching/copying/scanning the disc. that's just plain shoddy because as i say, in my humble experience a disc that skips or freezes always has corruption on the disc. A burn program in 2006 should have the intelligence to warn you of corruption during/after the burn, it's unbelievable that we just cannot trust a 'completed successfully' message from the burn program. Until such time as the programmers can build in 100% guaranteed CRC detection i have to keep it at safe, tested speeds. <rant over> !

... I understand .. I burn on one or two machines and check on another (I have three computers at home) and I do get better scans from 16x Verbs if I burn 'em fast ...
