I haven't found any information on how to do this anywhere, so maybe I'll find someone who has some insight on this here.

Basically, I have a TiVo with an ethernet card and TiVoWeb installed. I'm grabbing the .ty streams from my iMac, converting them to .mpg (MPEG2) with the tyc command line application in OSX, and then trying to edit out the commercials before burning them to a DVD.

My issue arises when trying to edit the .mpg file. I've tried Final Cut Express, but I get no audio when importing the .mpg, and when exporting the edited file, the application displays some error and stops the export. I've also tried Adobe Premiere 6 in OS9, but I can't import the .mpg file there at all, and from what I've read, I would have the same issue with audio in Premiere as I have with FCE.

I also tried demuxing the .mpg into a .m2v and .mp2 with mpgtx for OSX, which was successful, but I can't do much with these separate files (can't import in Premiere or FCE).

How can I go from the .mpg converted .ty stream to an edited video file with no commercials to a DVD, without losing much quality?

I have the following applications available to me in OSX 10.2:

Final Cut Express
Adobe Premiere 6 (in OS9)
DVD Studio Pro 1.5
iMovie
iDVD
Quicktime 6.1.1 (with codecs to play MPEG2 files)

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you trying to edit MPEG files, you do realise that you will get a major quality loss by doing this.

Well I've discovered TyStudio, which runs under X11 in MacOSX. It's still beta ware, but it allows me to open .ty files locally or directly from the TiVo, make cuts of the file, and then converts the .ty to a .mpg file.

Though it's still buggy and is a GOP editor making exact frame cuts impossible, it does work very well.
