I looked for a similar problem via search and couldnt find one. I am not a beginner when it comes to backing up my DVDs, i have a hundred or so and want to keep them in case of a flood or something (i store in the basement). Anyway, im about halfway through my collection and my burner started reading and writing slow. At first i thought it was the disc (it was scratched and believe that contributed) because it took me 2.5 hours to just encode. However, when i tried to burn the disc it took over an hour as well. I came on to look for slow burn problems and the suggested was to reload my drivers of the burner, the primary and secondary IDEs. So i did. Still no luck, the burning and ripping is as slow as it was before.
Burner: HP DVD writer 740B (i also checked driver update)(can record DVD +/- R, RW etc. and says 16x but i can never get that speed, another question for another thread i guess)
RAM: 1 GB
Processor: AMD Athlon 3700+
HDD space atm: 100GB

If you need anything else to help me out, let me know. Hoping someone can help

Sounds like a DMA issue. Check faq 2, there will be a guide to reenable it:

Beltline: i thought it was too and checked previously, uninstalling the drivers was suggested if your drive was on DMA but was still running slow. Im wondering now if it could be as simple as a dirty lens? i mean i have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the drive (not physically but thr the drivers) but...

ill keep trying

may also be time for a defrag of your system. Its wise to do a regular one if you do a lot of dvd burning as the clutter of loose bytes when accumulated will slow your pc down considerably

Ya, i do defrag normally, almost twice a week. Anyway, i got it working. the lens was dirty (wasnt the problem, but there was alot of cat hair and junk in it). What did work for me tho, was uninstalling all the primary and secondary IDE channel drivers as well as the burner itself. Complete uninstall w/o restarting, then restart when its done. The computer completely reinstalled all the drivers and junk, and my burn time is back down to 12 mins for a full DVD and ripping/encoding is down to 4-5 mins for uncompressed. :P

Thanks for the help, i hope my experience will help another later

themidget - I thought bbmayo's guide said to try that?

Glad to hear you figured it out and are back and running FAST.
