Nero Error - DMA-driver error, CRC error

Ok. I have had this drive for what? - about 1 month?
I have had about 10 DVD burnt from it using the same setup, no problems.
Out of the blue, i get 4 coasters!
I was using the latest Nero 7, but decided to switch back to 6.6 because of bugs.
So two coasters caused by Nero 7, two from 6.6.
F/W is updated, all updates for Windows etc. installed.
I did have another drive installed, from an old pc - didnt work, uninstalled that, unplugged slave connection.
I did also unplug the master Drive, then plug it back in, tried uninstalling, then reinstalling the drivers - no luck.

I have followed the instructions word for word, but now i get "communication error" whenever i try to burn anything!
I will shut dow the PC, switch cables, and try again.

Communication Error...................
1) Old IDE controller drivers - This is the most common cause of this error message. You must have the latest drivers for your IDE controller card to prevent it. (It´s the same for SCSI cards). Go to the website of the manufacturer of your controller card and obtain the latest drivers. Such as Intel, VIA, SIS, etc. So go to your motherboard's site and see if they have a chipset update.
2) DMA settings - You may have DMA disabled for your CD-/DVD-ROM and recorder devices. You should enable this feature. If you have old drivers (even if you have the latest in some cases), DMA may not be properly supported, even though you can enable it. You should try with DMA disabled if you still have problems having enabled it.
Enable or disable DMA (how to):
To enable DMA in Windows 2000/XP, simply go to your 'Control Panel --> Systems --> Hardware --> Device Manager'. Double click on the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'. Right click on the 'Primary IDE Channel', go to 'Properties --> Advanced Settings' and change ´Transfer Mode´ to 'DMA if available'. Do the same for the secondary IDE channel.
For Windows 9x and ME, go to your 'Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager --> CD-ROM' and under the devices 'Properties --> Settings' enable or disable DMA.
3) Driver conflicts - You may have (or had) other CD recording software installed on your system. Their drivers can cause conflicts with our software when trying to communicate to the recorder. Please remove any other recording program you may have on your system and be sure all their drivers are removed as well.
4) Poor IDE cables - In many cases, with the recorders supporting UDMA, you must use 80pin IDE cables. 40pin IDE cables work with the recorder, but when it comes to the actual recording process, there may be problems. You may just have an IDE cable that is in poor condition and need to replace it, too. Or try a different connector on that IDE cable as the connector could be the cause.
5) CSEL - If your devices are jumpered with CSEL, your controller could be having trouble with this setting. It's best to change it, so that you have your devices jumpered as master or slave. Refer to the manual on your CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and recorder devices for how to do this.
NOTE: Your version of nero is somewhat buggy, update to version 7.0.8.2 from the nero site.

As i said before, my drive was working fine before.
Just switched the cable to check if it was faulty - no result.
DMA is enabled on all drives!!! Ive already checked though the motherboard settings and though device manager.
No confliting software, only 1 program that uses the Drive is used at a time!
Firmware for the drive is the latest, and chipset drivers are upto date.
Was using Nero 7, but I changed back to 6.6 because of bigs, and to see if it had the same problem as before.
How do i know if i have a 40 or 80 pin cable?
I'm pretty sure its 40, i have had about 20 successful DVD/CD burns uptil 2 days ago.
I just cant figure this one out!

DMA is off on you maxtor. Have you made sure that DMA is enabled for this drive in your BIOS?

Im pretty sure i enabled it on the HDD, but i went into the bios and changed it anyway, to DMA 4, i think.
I still dont get why it shows up in the Nero Log that its disabled!
Can you help me enable it?!
I went into the bios, im surei changed it! I definatly saved the settings!

First: Your version of nero is old so update to version 6.6.0.18...
Write down your nero serial# and then uninstall version 6.6.0.8 from your system using the general cleantool found here:

Next, download and install version 6.6.0.18 from the links provided, re-enter the serial# and you're good to go.

Fourth: Your still getting a communication error and the device..Maxtor 6L160M0 BACE m5287 Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off...still shows DMA as off.
If there is something wrong with the drive or the IDE driver (why it's important to keep those chipset drivers upto date), this could result in a communication error (I believe you can use nero to test the drive..nero drive test?).
If your drive keeps reverting back to PIO, there could be something wrong with it so the OS tells the drive to revert back to the slower PIO mode.
NOTE: sometimes nero is wrong so check in device manager to make sure that it's set for DMA mode.

I have checked the settings after burning for my Drive, there still set at DMA if available, and the one of them has DMA 4, it doesnt revert back to PIO, the settings stay the way i set them too.
Does it make a difference if my Hard Drive is S-ATA? - Its not IDE!
There is no options available to see, nevermind change to DMA.
The structure of the files i used isnt the problem, i have tried other files (which work properly) and still get the communication error. I just used the other files to get a quick log from nero.
Also just reinstalled Nero 7, still same problem.

Serial ata devices a usually set to run at UDMA6 and will not show up unless you enter the controller's bios to check (at least that's how mine is).
If you're sure you checked everything suggested........
I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with the burner??

Well, when i got it, it ran smoothly.
No problems whatsoever for at least 4 weeks. - woohoo.
But, i got some error on Nero after trying to burn a DVD Video.
I was told to update the firmware, and all will be good.
So i downloaded the right firmware, tried to install it...
I get some error about it cant install, there is a problem with the drive.
I emailed support, and they told me that my drive is broken, i need to replace it. They came stright up and said that!
I decided to try again, and again...
Two days later i just decided to try and install it. It worked!
So now i had an up to date DVD burner!
Tried a few DVD's to burn, no problems, the error had gone!
Emailed the support back, saying what i ha done, and that i do not need a new drive, this one is fine.
Now, i have this problem. Its making me think that the drive was doomed from the start...
But i did work after the firmware up date though, thats whats so confusing.
Im worried im going to have to get a new DVD burner. I was pleased with this 110D, but now it seems to have died only after 1 month!

Either the drive was defective to begin with prior to the firmware update, producing the error you mentioned "I get some error about it cant install, there is a problem with the drive", or something went wrong during the update process??? who knows.....
It looks like a new drive is the answer to your problem, sorry.

But i still dont understand how the drive worked fine for ages, and then spews out 4 coasters!
I suppose i could get a new burner, hopefully i can get it out of the warrenty.

Old IDE controller drivers - This is the most common cause of this error message. You must have the latest drivers for your IDE controller card to prevent it. (It´s the same for SCSI cards). Go to the website of the manufacturer of your controller card and obtain the latest drivers. Such as Intel, VIA, SIS, etc.
DMA settings - You may have DMA disabled for your CD-/DVD-ROM and recorder devices. You should enable this feature. If you have old drivers (even if you have the latest in some cases), DMA may not be properly supported, even though you can enable it. You should try with DMA disabled if you still have problems having enabled it.
Enable or disable DMA:
To enable DMA in Windows 2000/XP, simply go to your 'Control Panel --> Systems --> Hardware --> Device Manager'. Double click on the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'. Right click on the 'Primary IDE Channel', go to 'Properties --> Advanced Settings' and change ´Transfer Mode´ to 'DMA if available'. Do the same for the secondary IDE channel.
For Windows 9x and ME, go to your 'Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager --> CD-ROM' and under the devices 'Properties --> Settings' enable or disable DMA.
Driver conflicts - You may have (or had) other CD recording software installed on your system. Their drivers can cause conflicts with our software when trying to communicate to the recorder. Please remove any other recording program you may have on your system and be sure all their drivers are removed as well.
Poor IDE cables - In many cases, with the recorders supporting UDMA, you must use 80pin IDE cables. 40pin IDE cables work with the recorder, but when it comes to the actual recording process, there may be problems. You may just have an IDE cable that is in poor condition and need to replace it, too. Or try a different connector on that IDE cable as the connector could be the cause.
CSEL - If your devices are jumpered with CSEL, your controller could be having trouble with this setting. It's best to change it, so that you have your devices jumpered as master or slave. Refer to the manual on your CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and recorder devices for how to do this.

Obviously I didnt. I saw communication error recoreded in your LAST log so I responded to it.
I have gone back to your FIRST log and could NOT see communication error so I am at a loss how johnl123 decyphered it to be the problem

I don't know if this will help, but this is what I did on my IDE controlled HDD when I had this problem:
Enter your BIOS > Drive Configuration > IDE Drive UDMA - Select 'on' and save changes. I don't have a SATA HDD so I can't tell you what you will see in your BIOS under Drive Configuration, but their should be a UDMA selection for your IDE channels and SATA I would think.
Also, I was wondering if there was a different place in the device manager under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers that your SATA controller shows up. Is there anything else listed other than the Primary and Secondary IDE channels? If there is, maybe it has the enable DMA option?

Ok, im pretty sure i enabled all DMA options on the Device Manager.
There are no options in device manager to enable DMA, infact, there is no options to even see it.
Do you think it will be ok to go through my bios settings and enable/select DMA on everything i can? - if thats even possible?

Sounds like a loose, or defective cable to me, probably the IDE cable going to the burner drive. Check it by pushing in on the cables, both connection sides, but not real hard. If you feel it move at all, you could have had a loose connector. Just a guess. If that doesnt work, try replacing that cable. Its alot cheaper than a drive, and would tell you if the cable is bad. Just be careful to not bend pins when re-installing a cable, and get the orientation correct.
Communication errors. IDE is the main data path for that drive.
Again, just guessing, and its worth checking.

I have unplugged the drive a few times to check the pins, but didnt actually think about checking if the cable has bad connection or is loose.
