could be anything from spyware to overheating. i'm guessing overheating. if it's virii/spyware-free and there's not other software problems, it's time to examine the hardware.

do a search for Everest and SiSoft Sandra...those progams could give you a total system report.

Hi,
I recommend (if only to help diagnosis) you disable all energy-conservation crap from within Windows.
Right-click desktop > Properties > Screen Saver > Power > set Power Schemes to 'Minimal Power Management'. Apply.
Set all three to 'never - never - never' (Sounds like my ex-girlfriend :^) LoL
Also disable Hibernation. Disable ScreenSaver.
Incorrect BIOS settings can also be a factor in problems like this, although Dell BIOS is pretty simplistic...
Anyway try this first - it has solved these issues in the past!
You then have a new and separate problem of why your PC locks-up when attempting to go on standby (or maybe it's as simple as ScreenSaver locking-up).
But let us know if this helps the immediate problem,
Regards

Yes, overheating of course (would be simple diagnosis :^)
But apart from that, lockups can occur when power-management attempts to kick in, ie. Turn off Monitor (no thanks), Turn off Harddisk (evil!), System Standby, and Hibernation (not my PC, thank you).
Often the hardware and/or ACPI BIOS are not 100% compliant...

Hmmm... that's a bit drastic, don't you think? LoL :^)
