PS2 Network Adaptor Needs Start-Up Disc?

I am ready (kind of late, I know) to play some PS2 online. I have the first PS2 (not the slim, without the built-in network adaptor) so I need to buy a network adaptor. Now EB online has them for a mere 10 bucks, but they don't guarentee the start-up disc. Do I NEED this disc, or can I create ISP settings and all that jazz via whatever game I am playing...?

You should be able to set it up in whatever game your playing.

Yeah, I was able to do all the set-up stuff on the MGS Subsistence disc. It was actually easier than using the set-up disc (which I got with the adapter I bought at a physical EB. I failed when using the set-up disc, I guess because I needed to power cycle my modem after switcing the cables.
