Problems Burning DVD?s with Sony DRU 810A

recently purchased the Sony DRU 810A and bought some Sony DVD-R?s for it. The burner came with the Nero software and I?m having problems copying DVD?s. I turned on Any DVD and used Nero ROM to copy DVD?s, the first one I did looked like it was working but then came up with something that said problems reading or something like that and it had to cancel. So there goes one, tried to do it again and it was able to copy but the program kept saying something like unavoidable read error but after watching the copy, it looked like it worked bu what did those errors mean? I then tried to copy another DVD but it stopped at like 30%, canceled it then put it another DVD-R and it stopped at 59%, tried another one and it stopped at 60%. For some reason these three kept stopping and it was taking a long time. I thought burning DVD?s were just as quick as CD?s. The first and only successful one I had took about 30 minutes?is that how fast it is supposed to be? I need help please?thanks!!!

DVD backups are a bit more complicated than CDs, as you've noticed. A 4X burn usually runs in the neighborhood of 15 minutes and a 6X at about 10 to 12. I don't recommend burning any faster, at least not over 8X with good equipment and media. You're using the right decryption software, it's hard to beat AnyDVD. However, with Nero you may be using the wrong app. You have to fit the source to the target. In other words the factory DVDs are usually higher content than the 4.7 discs (which only hold 4.37GB). If you're doing DL, it should record 1:1. But if recording to the 4.7, you need a program such as Recode 2, part of the Nero Ultra, to transcode (shrink) the factory DVD to fit, if the content of the factory disc is larger than 4.37GB. Another thing to remember is that you need enough HD freespace to do the movie. A rule of thumb is to have twice the size of the DVD to be backed up in freespace. As an example, a 6GB DVD should be safe with 12GB of HD freespace.
By the way, the entire process of doing a backup, including transcoding can take an hour or so. There's usually more to it than just burning. The backup process includes decryption, transcoding, and burning. With AnyDVD, the decryption takes place as the transcoding is done, so that isn't added on, but trancoding is separate from burning though "burning" is the term sometimes given to the backup process.

I'm sorry but what is at DL? So you're saying that if I just want to copy a DVD to a DVD-R, I need to use Nero Ultra? Where do I find the program called Recode 2 under that? Is there anyway you can show me step by step on what to do?
Also, why did I get those errors? Does the DVD have to be really clean? I'm just trying to back up my almost 3 year olds DVD's especially since he likes to carry them everywhere he goes so they get scratched up and stuff? What do you think?

Guides for the programs included in the Nero Ultra package are available for download from the Nero website. They explain the software usage better than I can, they are professionally written guides. You need the free Adobe Reader to open the guides in pdf format. Recode 2 is part of the Nero Ultra package. The program package is also available from other sources. You can check around for better pricing. Your log from the Nero program used would be useful if you could find and post it and if you saved it. A number of things could have caused the problem, among those being the source was too large for the target media (movie files bigger than the disc you want to record to). Not enough disc space. No way of really knowing without specific error codes or the log.
DL is merely dual layer media which holds about 8.5GB of data.
If you record anything larger than 4.37GB to a 4.7 disc, you need to shrink it with a program like Recode 2. The OEM version you have may not have that program. As I said, look at Nero's website if you like Nero. An easier program to use is CloneDVD 2. You have to have a program like AnyDVD to bypass the factory copyright protection. You can get a trial for both AnyDVD (to bypass encryption) and CloneDVD 2 (to process and size movie files and record) at http://www.slysoft.com/ . These 2 are the easiest way to do backups. You can read about how AnyDVD works at the Slysoft website. With CloneDVD2 you simply open the files and follow the program directions. It's that simple. AnyDVD works on its own, so it's no bother either. Follow system recommendations which should include the system specs you should have and the amount of hard drive free space required.

I was able to burn a few DVD's but a few I had problems with. I guess my question is: does a bad DVD-scratches, skips, and etc...make a difference because I get a lot of read errors when the DVD's are being analyzed? My (almost 3 yr old)kid loves his DVD's and carries them everywhere he goes. I guess if it does cause problems in recording you can ignore the following:

Disk condition is very important. That's why we back up the originals to keep them from getting damaged. Scratches and smudges can cause serious read errors. Even a big, greasy fingerprint can cause a problem. So, ideally the disk should be scratch free and have a clean, polished surface. Minor scratches are to be expected, but after a point the laser can't read through the outer layer to read the recorded layer(s) inside. Cleaning and polishing can help. For badly scratched DVDs I use Skip Dr to remove scratches. If the scratches are really bad or gouged into the inner disk, not much will help.

The sony isn't the problem, The thread title could have been just as easily "Problems Burning DVD's with a PC". This thread appears to be focused more on the software and media than any particular equipment. So, a better title would have been "Problems doing backups with Nero" and the thread should have been posted to the Nero section. ;) But the newbie section catches most of the newbie posts till they learn there are other sections specializing in particualar software and hardware topics. Newbies don't always know where the problems are till they ask. So, it's a learning process.

Just a few suggestions,
1.) Update your burners' firmware. I noticed it is at 1.0d, and the current rev. is 2.0d. Go here to do so, and click on the small 2.0d next to 'new'.

Some have said this is 'risky', but I think that is more related to modified or 'hacked' firmware. I have my 810UL/A (depends who you ask) and it worked fine.
2.) Also, uninstall Nero InCD from your PC as this can cause problems when burning.
3.) In the screen in Nero Recode where you click on the 'burn' button, uncheck the 'burn at once' option before you burn. Doing this will allow Nero and PC to fully encode the movie you are burning, before it burns it. 'Burn at once' basically tells the drive/PC to encode a little then burn, encode a little, then burn, etc. I've had problems with this before.
I feel your pain with the Sony 810UL/A... as I can't get the thing to burn dual-layer discs with my desktop. Works ok with my laptop though... can't figure it out. Single-layer discs work fine too.
Try these (3) things, hope it helps. Good luck!

Sony has a good support site and the firmware version listed for the DRU-810A is 1.0D. If Sony has the 2.0D, they haven't posted it to their support site yet. Check with Sony Support. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru810adwn.htm
It's fairly safe to update firmware as long as it's the firmware suggested and supplied by the manufacturer. Hacked firmware may be good in some cases, but it can be dangerous for the drive, if it doesn't match up properly.
gsmackfan is right about removing InCD from the Nero installation. Batch writing software, whether InCD or another source, can cause problems as it likes to keep contact with the burner drive and can interfere with other apps trying to use the burner.
The Burn at Once is referred to as "burning on the fly". It takes a good quick system with plenty of RAM to do it properly. To be on the safe side, it's best for most to not use the option. In fact Nero mentions not to use it if doing more than one disk as it may then take longer. Best to let the system create the complete temp file and then burn it all at once.

This also will cause a problem, the recommended amount of RAM is 512meg so I would add a further 256meg, in the meantime do not multitask while burning.

I see that you also have Roxio installed, it is reported by the knowlegable members here at AD that Roxio and Nero clash, they recommend uninstalling Roxio.

Probably a sound group of suggestions if there are additional problems. However, if the problem is with saratched up DVDs, just try one in good condition to see if everything is working okay.
As an owner of Roxio, I can say on some systems there isn't a problem. I only needed to turn off Drag to Disc when recording DVDs. Like Nero's InCD, Roxio has the Drag to Disc as a batch writing app. Batch writing software can cause interference with the burner sometimes when trying to record a DVD. I was able to turn off Drag to Disc and Roxio played well with Nero and everything else. It is suggested that InCD be removed. For batch writing software in general, the suggestions are first try turning it off (if possible) to see if that works before making the decision to delete. If for some reason you need to remove Roxio, there is a clean up tool for it as well, Roxizap; sort of like Nero's Clean Tools.
First try backing up an unscratched disc that's in good condition. That may be your only problem for now. If not, we're here to help.

By the way, Gwen was right on the 6.6.1.4. Here's a link for the older 6.6.0.18 which was more stable, if you do find you need it. Depends on the sytem. Some people have been doing okay with the last release. ftp://ftp.Nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

The UL is the external version and Sony does have the 2.0D firmware version listed for it. As I mentioned before, you should check with Sony support. They should be able to give you an answer on that.

1.0d is the latest firmware for the Sony DRU-810A, http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru810adwn.htm Do not try to flash it with 2.0d for the DRU-810UL.
Anyways, I have the Sony DRU-810A and have not had any problems with it. I suggest using AnyDVD and CloneDVD to make your backups. It is sooo simple to use and makes good quality backups. They even have a free 21 day trial. It is almost idiot proof!
