How to add Subtitles to a video (.MPEG)

What you will need: VirtualDub, VirtualDub Subtitler Filter, Sub Station Alpha and TMPGEnc 12b.

Making the Subs
Unfortunately, there?s no easy way to do this unless you are getting the movie clips off a DVD. That will come later.

First, you?ll have to make the subtitles for your movie clip. That?s right, you have to manually type them in. It?ll take a long time, but in the end, sometimes it?s worth it.

Download the Sub Station Alpha.
Install it and start making the subs. Basically, what you do is type in the subtitles, and then set the start and stop times around it. By the way, to make it easier to synchronise against the video, you can extract the audio from the video (into .wav) and then open it in Sub Station Alpha.

Once you have finished typing the subtitles, you can then save them as "example.ssa" for example. By the way, if you?re subtitling Dragonball, Dragonball Z, or Dragonball GT, it won?t take as long. Think about it. A lot of it is fighting. The only real pain is when they have to explain some really long story like where Trunks came from or something. YAWN!!!

Adding the Subs to the Video
Now Install VirtualDub, and extract the Subtitles Filter to the Virtualdubs folder plugins.
Launch VirtualDub
Go to File, Open and select the movie you are adding the subtitles to. For your information, VirtualDub supports MPG, AVI and DivX.

Select Video, then Filter to configure the subtitle filter.
Select Add.
Select the subtitler Filter and then Click OK.

Open the .ssa file that you have made with Sub Station Alpha by clicking on the ...
and click OK.

Click OK again and you will be brought back to the VirtualDub Preview.
Now select Video, then Full Processing.
Now my friends, it's time to "Frameserve" the Video directly to TMPGEnc.

IMPORTANT, before doing this you have to have installed the "handler." So, go to the VirtualDub folder and run "auxsetup.exe" and click the button "Install Handler." Then click OK. Exit it and it's done.

Now, go back to VirtualDub and select File, then Start Frame Server.
A Frame Server Setup window will appear. Click Start and a save window appears.

Save the file as "anything.vdr" for example.

Now, a window should appear, and it should say "Frameclients installed: AVIFile only."

If it says anything else, then you must install the Handler again as describe above.

DO NOT click on the "Stop Serving."

Now it's time to Encode the frameserved video to MPG. Launch TMPGEnc.
Open the .vdr by selecting "Files of types: All files."
This is primarily a VCD tool, so it will ask you to select a VCD or SVCD template to encode to. Just select VCD, as this is standard .MPEG.

Now, TMPGEnc will encode the .AVI to .MPG and you?re done. Congratulation, you?ve just added subtitles.

Hope this is of help to you. Theres no easy way of doing it.

Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

Assuming that you already have the subtitles, here is a guide:
