Ok, at the moment i am using the Anydvd 21 day trial, and burning the films with nero with anydvd in the background.

I've been told to buy Anydvd and Clone dvd, as they are brilliant and easy to use. Does everyone think this is the case?

Also, just to clear something up, i know it will probably osund stupid. What the hell is "DVD Decryptor"? When i click the link it links me to anydvd, and i can't actually find a program called anydvd. So i thought, maybe people jsut mean "a" dvd decryptor, but in the disussions its naming it as an actual program. Sorry for my ignorance, please rpely, Billy,

Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

The Slysoft programs work well enough. If you want to spend the money for them, go right ahead. Plenty of people swear by them, and they are easy.
DVD Decrypter is a free program that rips DVDs, removes the copy protection, etc. It can also create disc images, burn discs, and more. Unfortunately it's not being updated any more, but still a great app.

Considering how cheap AnyDVD is, I think it's the best program on the market for backing up DVDs. The newest version even has a ripper (even though I don't use it) but still. It just keeps getting better and better. Plus, I think they still run the afterdawn member's discount for 10 dollars off. All you have to do is type in "afterdawn" (sans quotation marks--obviously) for the coupon code. Don't quote me on this, though. Anyone else knows if this promotion is still available?

Anyway, DVD Decryptor is a fantastic program. Unfortunately, 1- it is no longer updated and 2- it's no longer available on this site. It can decrypt a movie and then burn a copy. It cannot compress though. For that, you need Shrink (or something else).

Considering this is my method of backing up movies (Shrink to compress and Decryptor to burn), you would think that these two antiquated programs would have problems with newer encryptions and discs but with the newest versions of AnyDVD (which I always upgrade), I rarely run into problems.

Hope that helps ;)

Billybob: Here's what google search revealed:

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/#dvddecrypter

Courtesy of mrbass! There's even a guide there and you can dowload DVD Decrypter.

Just remember, there's 2 main modes that we use: File mode-for DVD-9 to be compressed-via DVD Shrink- to DVD-5.
And ISO mode-for non compressed 1:1 copy.Whether it's DVD-5 to DVD-5 or DVD-9 to DVD-9. It can be confusing at first, but main thing is the size of the dvd you are ripping. I always open up DVD Shrink and let it do a quick analyzation. If the compression setting says 100,then no compression. You can use DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and write only.

I like the ISO mode, very quick if you run into a DVD-5 original or you want to make another copy of your backups. It's the only program I use for Dual layer backups.

The combination of anydvd/dvd shrink/and nero6 do the majority of my DVD-9 backups onto blank DVD-5 media. It's an easy process, once you get all your settings correct. Nero will autoburn with DVD Shrink so no extra step is involved to burn. I do leave AnyDVD disabled, until DVD Shrink runs into a problem. Most of the newer sony and columbia releases may have to have AnyDVD running.

Anydvd is well worth the money. It's the only program that I recommend that isn't free.

Clonedvd is ok,but costs $.You still need a background ripper with it. Nero also won't pull of encryption, but AnyDVD will pull it off for most programs that I know of.

It's also great to have a couple of programs on your pc in case of trouble. Dvdfab decrypter is another free ripper, and works like DVD Decrypter in file mode. Others swear by vobblanker.

DVDShrink is free and does just as good a job as most you pay for - better in fact. The only time you need to use something like CloneDVD with AnyDVD is when you are having problems ripping due to new encryption blocking.

OK thanks, that cleared alot up.

Just one thing, if you use Nero 6 to to burn the files to disc, why do you use DVD Shrink if oyu can skip that process by getting Nero to make to "copy entire disc"?

Just asking lol.

Actually two things, when youve ripped a movie with DVD Shrink, they are ISO files or something, i think. Is there a way of converting these to mp4, or jus tnormal video file

Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

Yes if your file is small enough to fit onto a 4.3g disk then make a direct copy, but if your file is bigger then you need to compress it and would need Shrink, Nero Recode or CloneDVD to do this. You can just create VOB files with Shrink, when you hit your backup button tell Shrink to copy to your HDD and make sure you have the box checked for VTS files. Otherwise, if you want to autoburn with Nero, Decrypter or CopyToDVD then you need to create an iso file.

You just configure DVDShrink to burn with Nero - like all software you should always check in 'options' before using. If you have seperate DVD files on your HD (less than 4.34Gb) then you can drag them into Nero and burn direct.

If you have enabled Nero under preferences, then pick your file and then hit the backup button, and make sure these are your settings on that screen so you will get the autoburn with Nero, make sure you are running Nero 6.6.0.18 or lower the last update for Nero no longer allows the autoburn with Shrink

Make sure you choose your burn speed and whether to booktype on the burn options screen

Just let Shrink rip the disc and then leave it alone - it will go automatically into burn option and eject the disc for you when all is complete.

Thank you, you've all helped alot, maybe i won't be such a retard if future lol. Thanks people.

When you've ripped the film to your Hdrive with shrink, they are VOB files i think and ISO files (again i think). Is there a way you can convert this to a normal movie file, like mp4 or something?

Thanks again
