Hey Guys,

I just tried to re-flash the Sony External DRU-810UL (which is actually an 810A), and I get an error saying:

"The drive is not allowed to be updated"

Any ideas??? I mistakenly re-flashed it a few months ago, to 2.0d FW, thinking it was the right one for DRX-810UL.

I'm stumped. Maybe someone has seen this before... I hope.

Thanks in advance,

Gregg

Your fw is listed as correct on the Sony site, for a 810UL it should be 2.0d that is not your problem so do not worry about any reflash.

Ok I'm gunna climb in again as I seem to have messed up with the firmware issue, I just want confirm a couple of things

1.the external burner reads and burns normaly on your laptop but not on your desktop unit ?

2.you can burn dvd 5 but not dvd 9 on your desktop ?

3.you have used the same usb cables for both laptop and desktop ?

4.can you do a test burn on the laptop and post a log I'm wondering if windows is reporting the ext burner incorrectly on your desktop ?

5.are you using a hub between your usb card and the burner ?

philraz,

1.) You're correct, I can burn a DL DVD (DVD9) no problem with my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L25-S119) using ImgBurn, but not with my desktop (Dell P4 1.4GHz w/ Windows XP SP 2).

2.) Correct again. I've burned a ton of DVD5s with my desktop, with both my internal burner (Sony DRU-530A) and with my external, the 810A/UL or whatever the heck it is! :) For DVD5s, I use Nero 7 Ultra and have only had a few problems over the last few years, which were probably opeator error. 400+ DVD5 back-ups.

3.) Correct again. I just unplug the USB cables from the USB ports on the desktop or laptop, and plug into the other (power off on eveything, just to be safe). Simple plug and play.

4.) Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question here... as I have posted (2) ImgBurn logs that I tried on my desktop with a DVD9. See other posts, or let me know if you want to see something else. As much as I can tell, the desktop is seeing the external burner as a DRU-810A. As I mentioned in another one of my previous posts, I forgot to save the log from the successful burn that I had the other night with the laptop. I believe the laptop sees the burner as the same thing (810A). I have another concert DVD that I am ready to back-up, so I'll try to do that tonight with my laptop, and I'll save the log. I'll post for you guys to see and compare...

I'm almost thinking there is something 'newer' related to Windows that I have on my laptop (since it's only a few months old), that I don't have on my desktop?!? Perhaps an update that I need?

5.) No hub between the USB card and burner. Just a straight shot.

I know, it's puzzling. I thought the firmware thing was it...

In the meantime, I'll keep using my laptop to burn DVD9s. I don't burn that many, so in reality... it's no huge deal. But now, I'd just like to get to the bottom of this and get to the root cause... for my own mental stability! Ha!

Thanks for your help you guys!

Gregg

Your burner is being seen as an 810a because that is what the drive is, however it is in an external enclosure and given a different listing for id purposes. I have a Plex 716a internal and external, the external is a 716UF when you buy, but it is still just a 716a to the computer and shows the same as the 716a internal. Have you tried any other program but ImgBurn to do you dual layers on your desktop, since you can burn on the laptop there has to be some difference in setup. The drive is obviously working.

arniebear,

I understand the whole 'drive ID' and what the system recognizes things. No worries there. Someone else clarified that I have the correct FW on the external.

I just upgraded to Nero Ultra 7 a few weeks ago, and I tried that once for DVD9s, but I don't think I was in the correct application to burn a DL disc. Plus, it was late at night... wasn't really awake!

Is there anything you (or others) can recommend in Nero? I love the program and it's done wonders in the past for me for DVD5s. I would certainly try it, if someone had a suggestion.

Actually, I think I was in Nero Burning ROM (not 100% on that) and when I tried to 'click and drag' the ISO file from the right hand side over to the left, for a new compilation, I got an error saying 'file size is too big', 'try using the UDF mode'... or something like that. So, I went back out into the main Nero 7 screen and saw there was a 'Make UDF DVD' option (something like that), so I tried that and that didn't work... can't remember exactly what the error was then.

As I said, if anyone can recommend anything to try in Nero, that would be awesome.

Thanks for your time you guys,

Gregg

After looking at your logs you are right the problem starts near what will be the LB. If you still have your original you can try ripping in F mode of Decrypter the use Nero BR to backup. But if not I have also done iso backups using CopytoDVD which is a Nero like program and works well for DL's. There is a free trial of this program if you would like to try it.

http://www.vso-software.fr/download.php

I did notice that the speed is fast in the logs, the only time I got an error like you had is when I forgot to change my speed to 2.4x for my burn. Decrypter could not handle the LB at the higher rate using my external Plex.

Thanks for the info. arniebear. I'll try your suggestions.

So, Nero Burning ROM will handle a disc that was ripped in file mode??? Huh. I didn't think it could... as I thought you had to have an .iso or something similar. I'll check into it.

You're right, in one of the ImgBurn logs I posted, I forgot to change the write speed to 2.4x. The other one I did, and it still failed. Also, what's weird is... in my latest attempt the other night with my laptop, I left the burn speed set to 'Max' (forgot to change it again) and got a successful burn, with a top write speed of almost 7.x! Go figure.

Anyways, I'll mess around with Nero a little and see how that goes. So, do you just basically select the entire 'movie' folder containing the audio_TS and video_TS files, etc. and move that over to a new compilation (left hand side of window)? I may need a little help with the specific process, but I'll try it out and post how it goes. Maybe that will work for me... who knows?

Thanks,

Gregg

Here is Nero guide from me, don't know if it will work for you

This is for booktype settings, which I believe your burner does to ensure playback on all players.

Thanks for the guide arniebear, I appreciate your efforts. It was a tad tricky to follow, but I got it all setup correctly and attempted to burn with Nero Burning ROM with no success. The burn crapped out this time at 47%, with a 'write error'.

The 'burn process aborted' was self-induced, as I couldn't get out of Nero. I had to manually 'crash' (turn off) the 810A.

If anyone see anything 'suspicious', please feel free to comment. There's something common to burning DVD9s with the desktop PC, cause I did another DVD5 immediately after this with Recode2/external 810A and everything was fine.

I'm hoping one of you experts out there can see something in some of the error codes or something.

Thanks for your time you guys, I appreciate it. Take it easy,

Gregg

Good question. I didn't really look at the log that much... as I tried the burn kind of late last night. I just emailed the log .txt file to work this morning and posted.

I guess I should look into this some more. I'm not sure why it isn't listed. It is a USB thing? I would think it should be listed as well, since the Iomega External HD (HDxxxxT80) is listed. Huh. Interesting.

If there was an issue though, I don't understand why/how the burn even starts?!? And why can I do DVD5s with Recode2 using the 810A? Confusing.

Anyone else have ideas??? I don't think I got an installation CD or anything with the drive for setup. Maybe I'll check Sony Support.

Thanks,

Gregg

Well Nero knows the burner is there and running, but it should show up in the log. Interesting because I have not seen one where the burner even and external is not listed in the device part.

arniebear,

I just saw this on the Sony Support link that you have on the thread here,

The correct USB drive installation process is as follows:

DO NOT CONNECT THE DRIVE

1.) Install the software, PC or MAC
2.) Power down the system and connect the drive, if there is a hub
DO NOT use it at this time
3.) Power on the drive FIRST
4.) Upon system power up, the system will detect the drive and
install the drivers.

"If the system displays the drive as an Unknown Device in Device Manager, double-click on it, and select Install Driver. This should install the drivers, and the drive will appear under CD-Rom. If you recieve the message that "Windows is already using the best driver for this device," simply highlight and remove the Unknown Device. Reboot the system and/or turn the drive off and on to refresh."

I don't believe I did this when I got the drive, since I thought the only software that came with the drive was their copy of Nero (which I didn't want to install). I wanted to install my own copy of Nero...

Anyways, I'll check into this more after work and see what happens then. Maybe this is it?!? My only worry is that a bunch of other 'crap' will be installed, that I don't want. Should I take the 'device manager' route to install the driver? Any suggestions?

I also downloaded a 5MB hardware installation MPEG that I will watch, just for grins... maybe there's something on there.

If this is it, I'll feel kinda dumb for not doing this, but oh well... I've done worse!

I'll post how it goes.

Thanks,

Gregg

It would be wonderful if this solves some problems, I guess the device mgr route is good. Some mfr will have drivers for their USB drives which have more to do with the enclosures rather than the drive itself.

I don't know for sure yet (since I'm at work still), but I think these directions (previous post from me) were for a DRX500UL. The MPEG that I downloaded was an install guide for an internal drive... didn't help me here. Not sure if it's the same for my external 810A/UL.

http://sony.storagesupport.com/cgi-bin/sonysupport.cgi/WqKvuMfBUn...

Anyways, I'll still check the CDs that came with it to see if I missed something.

There's also something else I came across, but I'm not sure if it applies to my case. There's some Windows XP updates on the page below, but I don't think any would apply to the problem I am having with dual-layer DVDs... maybe I'm wrong.

http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/qs_winxp.htm#sw

Or, just a XP driver or update that I am missing???

There's also a Drive Diagnostic test that can be run too, but they say only if Sony Support recommends doing so.

http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/diagnostics.htm

Just thought I'd share this for ideas/suggestions.

Thanks,

Gregg

I don't think it is a drive problem, your drive burns okay and you have no problem with single layer disks. You can run the diagnostic tool which is always good to check out your drive performance anyway. It is something that is in the transition at the LB, it may even be a transfer issue. I have run several USB drives and found them to be more forgiving and less touchy than internal. Only bought an internal DVD writer about 8 months ago I have always run USB. Usually if Nero or any other program is having a problem with the drive or enclosure you get a SCSI error and you haven't gotten that. You do not show any problem drivers, and all looks good in your log except for the LB problem. Nero is really not a good program for DL but it was worth a try and the log is always good to show any kind of device errors or conflicts.

One last thing (I'm not sure if that helps): Use CloneDVD to rip and write. Also with this tool try both iso and file mode to rip and write. It's the only one that permitted me to write successfully DL discs, always using 2,4 X speed. But mainly as already has reported I believe that's a cabling issue. The only thing that rings me a bell is the layer brake (which is carrying out by CloneDVD). Drained from ideas...

Hey Guys.

I'm back with an update on this issue...

First, I made (3) attempts at backing up King Kong last night, using my laptop. This usually works no problem, but I still ran into the same 'I/O error' that I was getting with my desktop and Sony 810UL. (See previous posts if needed for problem description)

So, I kept track of what I did step by step, to try to eliminate some things that could cause the error.

1.) I ripped the movie in .iso mode to my external HD with no problems using DVD Decrypter.
2.) The first (2) attempts using ISO-write with ImgBurn and Decrypter respectively failed, one at 1% complete and the other at roughly, 23%. These (2) times, I inserted the disc into the drive WITHOUT having Decypter opened up. I had all my Norton, Ad-Aware, screen saver, etc. disabled. Write speed set to 2.4x and booktype set to DVD-ROM for DVD+R DL.
3.) I thought I'd try one more time, but this time, I made sure I had Decrypter opened and ready to go before putting a DL disc in the drive. I then inserted a DL disc and waited to initialization to complete. I selected the MDS file to burn and verified the booktype was set correctly to (DVD +R DL to DVD-ROM), which it was. I left the burn speed set to 'max' and the burn completed successfully.

So, my question is, is the problem coming from inserting the DL disc at an inappropriate time? i.e. before opening Decyrpter??? Is the layer break info. not being seen from Decypter's side, if the program isn't opened before inserting a disc? Just asking if it matters. What order do you guys use???. I'll try another burn the same way soon, to see if it's repeatable.

I also noticed something else. After the burn completed, I looked at the log... and after 'lead-in' was complete, Decrypter listed 'burning image' as the next step. This is usually 'burning layer 0', then 'burning layer 1'. I didn't think it was going to complete successfully because of this, but I checked the disc in my Sony DVP-NS975V and everything appears fine.

Just thought I'd see if anyone had thoughts/ideas to share on this.

Thanks to all who offered help with this problem.

Gregg

Glad that you got a good burn, not sure why Decrypter is not recognizing the media before you open the program, that could be a OS thing. As for the writing of the layers I found this post over at the imgburn site, and it states how the image is written on a dl.
Quote:
I'm not sure he wouldn't have a problem. From what I have read (if I remember it correctly) layer 1 is burned before layer 0 and after the image is finished burning the remainder of layer 0 is finalized. If the single layer image is burned to layer 1 then the entire layer 0 must still be finalized. That would take double the amount of time it would have taken to burn a DVD5 and he still might have problems at the layer switch
http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1139

BTW have you tried ImgBurn to backup, you would still have to rip with Decrypter to iso, but ImgBurn is a more updated version of the Decrypter burning engine.

Thanks for the info. arniebear.

Yes, my first attempt last night was with ImgBurn. No luck, and this is with my laptop. Same 'I/O write address' error. It would be nice if it did work with ImgBurn, since it does have an updated burning engine. That's why I tried that first. I would think that it would more likely work with ImgBurn, then Decrypter. Go figure.

It could just be a 'fluke' that I got this to work the 3rd time around, with putting the disc in after Decrypter was opened. Who knows.

Like I said, I'll try again using the same step-by-step process with a different movie and Decrypter, then try the same thing with ImgBurn (opening the program first). Maybe something with the disc info. isn't being recognized by the drive if you don't open the program first?!?

I'll post results when done. Just have to wait to buy another good movie to back-up! :)

Thanks again,

Gregg

Hey Guys. It's been a while since my last update, but I'm still trying to conquer this DL burning thing... and I have some good news and bad news to report.

First, the good news. I was able to get a successful burn (according to Imgburn 1.3.0.0, 'Operation Successfully Completed') after updating my FW on my external Sony 810UL (to 2.0e) and using my Toshiba laptop. I was able to back-up two of my DVDs, back to back. So I thought...

Now for the bad news, when I checked the first back-up, my Sony DVP-NS975V player said 'cannot play this disc'. I checked the other one and got the same thing. I remember seeing the info. screen on the right-hand side of Imgburn after the burn completes, this is what it said... (luckily I saved it)

It looks as though the booktype is set correctly (DVD-ROM), but why is it only showing me that there's 1 layer??? and a track path of 'parallel track path'??? I thought Imgburn uses OTP (opposite track path) to write? I believe there should be 2 layers listed under the 'Physical Format Information'.

I think there could be something set incorrectly in the 'settings' of Imgburn that I am unaware of... and that's where the great people of AD come in (hopefully). If anyone sees anything out of the ordinary with the logs, or has any thought/suggestions, please let me know.

I didn't change any settings in Imgburn before burning (other than making sure booktype was set to DVD-ROM, and write speed was 2.4x). I did have all other programs/ultilities, etc. turned off before burning (like Norton, Ad-Aware, screen saver, wireless).

I tried a movie this past weekend, but forgot to change the booktype to DVD-ROM and that one wouldn't play. I expected that though, since I checked it with DVD Identifier (and Imgburn) afterwards and said it was still a DVD+R DL.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated. I'm so close!!!

Gregg
