You certainly can, if the following are true:
Your burner supports the brand of DVD-R media you intend to use.
Your standalone DVD player(s) support reading DVD-R media.
Keep in mind you can not booktype DVD-R media. For the highest compatability, I always use DVD+ media booktyped to DVD-ROM.

sure as long as your burner/standalone dvd player supports it you should be fine ,whatever format you use make sure you are using good media is whats important Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim is the media of choice here ,another thing that is a good idea is if your usin DVD+R media is to booktype it to DVD-ROM for the best compatibly

chewbaca,
Not all dvdrw drives are capable of bitsetting/booktyping. What make and model do you have?

your DVD-R discs should still work ok as long as your drive will burn to that format (almost all drives will). Dvd-r's can not be booktyped dvd-rom anyway, only dvd+r's.
What make and model dvdrw drive do you have? What is the brand of your dvd-r's?

You don't need to change the book type settings for DVD-R discs. They are the write once discs supported by the DVD Forum. DVD+R discs can have their book type settings changed to claim they are "DVD-ROM" discs, a type accepted by the DVD Forum because the Forum has never, and will never, accept DVD+R as a valid format. It's all politics.
