i am going to go to best buy tomorrow and buy some +r verbs. I have a 16x burner.
-Is it better to burn these at half the speed of the discs or half the speed of the burner?
-And does it matter where the verbs are made, because don't they all have the azo dye to them?
-I want the best results, so what I was going to do was buy 16x verbs and burn them at 8x, but don't know what to look for on the label for the region where they were made. ie..Made in Tawain, or Made in Japan etc....

You want to burn At half the speed of the media........

Try those 16X Verb's @ 8X and see what results you get.

If not happy w/ results cut back to 6X or 4X.

I'm currently using 8X Verb's & am thinking about going to the 16 X.

I burn my 8X at 4X max. If I do get the 16X, I want to try them at 8X.

So post back w/ your results.

8X shouldnt be a problem as long as your using a good machine/burning etc.

all the Verbatims are (MIT) so thats NOT an issue .look for the datalife. Verbatim is top notch media along with Taiyo Yuden you cant go wrong using either

What I've used lately (last 4 months) are, don't laugh, TDK 8X, but they are Taiyo Yudens and 16X Verbatims AZOs. All +Rs. I'm almost out of the TY TDKs, then I have a slew of Verbtim16X AZOs +Rs I'll switch to. All have been burned at 8x with USB External LG 2166D 16X DL -+RW since Xmas.

My LG drives don't support Nero disc quality check, so I have no idea of what they would scan but they play flawlessly. The next drive will!

my shedloads of 16x +R MCC004 turned up today (turns out they're made in India, not Taiwan but i've always had great success with 8x Indian Verbs before) so i started on them straight away. to my annoyance the LG 4176B did it's usual trick of complaining at burning at 8x, so i switched back to the trusty 4163B. 8x all the way without a hitch. what an annoying hobby dvd burning can be :)

@creaky

I have to say that i have been lucky in this endeavour of DVD backups.I started with DVDXCopy express and when that went away with the new DRMs I came here and learned about shrink and Decryptor et al. I made a few coaster but the TDK (LG) 440N worked fine and still does.I now use it for DVD rips and The new LG 2166D burns fine. My only criticism is no Nero quality disc scans. It's like playing a game here on Tuesday when the new copy protected discs come out.

i'm exceptionally lucky (at 4x), just not at 8x :O

but as i get 110% consistent results (over 1000s of backups) from a given speed, i'm a very happy bunny

So your burning 16X media @ 8X ?????

That makes more sense.

I thought you meant that, you were burning 8X media @ 8X speed ?

@dagbig25 Partially correct: I'm burning 8X TDK branded TYs at 8X and 16X Verbatim AZos at 8x. I realize I'm supposed to burn at half the rated speed. But I've copied 1000s of cd s with no issues at media rated speed. BUT so far I've not tried 16X burn with DVDs. I'll stick with 8X burns since my pc and drive are having no problem with only 256MB RambusRD Ram-I'm in process of doubling memory but they sent wrong sticks. I think I'm just lucky! But as I said to creaky "if it ain't broke don't fix it" For fun some of these are done on the fly with no issues.

how do you like your plextor burner?

garmoon......

I'm LOVING my plextor. The Plex/Tools software that comes w/ it is awesome.

It's great when using w/ software that burns @ max. speeds. Plex/Tools overrides it so that you can set to NOT burn any faster, than what you want to burn at.

I highly recommend Plextor burners to my friends.

So should I try burning my 8X -R Verbatim DataLife Plus's @ 8X's ??????

You say you tested the disc with Nero DVD speed and got a 97. I have Nero and have been trying to run that test but can't seem to find the right options. How do you go about doing that? Thanks

@cardsrok

What version of Nero do you have? I had that problen until I got Nero 6.6.0.18. Now that option is available . I assume 7.X will have it too. My burner doesn't support the test. LGs

@dabig25

Verb's quality media rated at 8X, your burner rate at least 8X, I'll burn mine until I get toasters. I'm using NeroCrecode with advanced analysis and 8X burn. Never fooled with -Rs. Like the +Rs book typed to DVD-ROM.

Itis Nero 6. Can't find what version of 6 it is though. I can open up to cd-dvd speed and see a box for DAE quality but not doing something right unless this version is not conpatable for this.
