Hi creaky,

Thanks for responding so quickly it's appreaciated a lot. My name is john and i am new to this group as well as form. I am always looking for a persons input as i am so new to all this. Anyway I do have "ONE" question that no one has answered for me yet. So i will shoot it your way now in hopes of getting the answer i am looking for. I have a sony DRX810UL dual and double burner. I use two different types of MEDIA dvd r + and dvd r + DL. There is a program out there called DVD REBUILDER. is that program used when your going from a dvd 9 to a DVD5 to improve the quailty from the compression. because with the "VERB" DVD R + DL the quailty looks better then the DVD 5 but we both know that is due to the compression. if the program is used only to improve the quailty of the DVD9 to DVD5 why not just stick to the DVD R+ DL right . My thing is i know the quailty will improve with dvd rebuilder using DVD9 going to DVD5. what i am trying to say is why not just stick to the DVD9 which is a lil more money and you could avoid buying dvd builder and the dvd 5 disks. Does this all make any sence to you any help would be really nice thank you

DL media are still in their infancy. Factories are struggling to get yield rates up to or beyond 70%, and that is why these media cost so much. There are two problems: bubbles between layer 0 (the outside layer) and layer 1 (the inside layer), and contamination when the temporary spacer is pulled off. The transition from layer 0 to layer 1 occurs at the outside edge of the disc, and that is the weakest point of any optical medium. It's kind of like asking a bareback rider to do a flip while the horse is jumping fences instead of waiting for the horse to stop or just canter. The layer jump will remain a problem for a while until processes (and players) improve.

There are three ways around the problem: 1) compress a video file to fit onto a regular DVD, but that sacrifices quality, as you have seen; 2) compress a video file to 7 or to 7.5GB so that the layer transition occurs before the outer most edge on a DL disc; or 3) record both a compressed DVD version and a DL version. #3 is the most expensive, but it does mean that if the DL fails at some time, you have a backup that is more likely to play. I don't think DL media are ready for data files yet--the error spikes at the layer transition are too risky.
