I have been using DVDShrink 3.1.7.6 for some time now, with quite good results, but there are some cases when I don't get what I expect.

Through trial and error, I got to to see that I can stretch the disc capacity to about 5.3GB. That weems to depend very much on the media you use, the DVD burner and the DVD player (not so serious).

So when I have to shrink something I do a deep analysis, set the compression to around 5.3GB capacity and do a backup. Then use that backup for my burn.

Now I have file which is about 6GB long, which I burned using an 87% compression ratio. But I am getting some "blocking" and "choppy" artifacts, particularly more at the end.

Any tricks or tips to improve on this?

Try Maximum smooth under the AEC controls in DVD Shrink. But I find it hard to believe that you are overburning a DVD to 5.3 gigs. Burn slow, try 4X and don't multitask during the burn.

This is absolutely news to me. Are you saying you set your target to 5.3 gigs? And how do you set a compression rate to an actual gigabyte size? It only goes by percentage--at least, the DVD Shrink I use.

In fact, first you say that you set your compression to 5.3 gigs and then, for another burn, you say the compression sits at 87%.

Maybe someone else can help you. I'm interested in the responses though.

*edit* I just realized that the Shrink I use is 3.2. I don't think I ever used a 3.1.7.6.

I think what he is saying is that he's set his target size to 5300...but maybe I'm reading it wrong too.

Yes, I set my target size at 5.3GB, which onmy case would be 87% of 6GB.

BUT... remember this size is the result of 5.1GB video and 0.2GB AC3 audio.

LOCOENG: what do you exactly mean when you say that you "find it hard to believe that you are overburning a DVD to 5.3 gigs"?

That is something I have been pushing and pushing up to see how much could I get away without artifacts.

What are those AEC controls you mention?

Burning slow is what I do, and I usually avoid multitask when I am burning. Maybe that's why I get away with it most of the times.

Mr_Pink: let's hope you understood my procedure now.

Are newer DVDShrink versions better? I was told by a friend that newer versions did a worst compressing job than previous ones.
