im just curious as to how i can change my IP address. i have a router, and a cable modem. i have read on other sites, that with some modems the IP changes everytime the internet disconnects...is this true? and if not then how can i change the IP without calling my ISP and going through all that hassle?

thanks!

Use a proxy *not going to give you all the info, just look for it on wikipedia or google*

Have a look at the paperwork from your ISP, and that will tell you whether you have a static IP (doesnt change) or a dynamic IP ( which does change). I think that dynamic IP's are assossiated mainly with dial-up connections. If your connected by cable, then almost certainly you will have a static IP. Using a proxy server will not hide your IP.

A proxy will not actively change the ip itself, but it will hide your real ip adress (if you use a proper anonymous proxy, that is).
Though i wouldn't just use a proxy if your aim is full anonimity on the internet...

That only works if your ISP doesn't assign static ip adresses...

There are actually a couple of different IPs at work here.

For the most part, ISPs use dynamic IPs which change within a given range when you connect to the internet. This is done for good reason, as it helps with security against a fixed attack against a single IP address. Static IPs from those ISPs may cost more...which you can request from them. If you plan on having an internet server, you are going to need a static IP...otherwise no one will ever be able to connect to it. Imagine trying to find the post office every day when it's physical location changes every 24 hrs!

Now, if your ISP gives you a fixed IP, there is nothing you can do to change it yourself except to ask them to do it for you, but you must provide a real good reason for it.

If you are using a router then your system itself has a different IP altogether from the one you are using to connect to the internet. The router assigns individual IPs, again with a given range, to each computer connected to that router when set to Auto Config. If you have been given your ISPs DNS and sub DNS information, you can set your own IP on each computer as a fixed IP within the LAN. Those are changed from your My Network Places properties.

couldnt of said it better myself guess i was feeling lazy to go on about static ips. i have a dynamic ip and each time i reconnect my router the ip changes. if u use p2p program such as torrents and want to hide ur ip on there use peerguardian 2. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/p2p_software/p2p_tools/peerguar...
