Hi friends... I hope nobody laughs at me, but I cannot figure this out no matter how many threads I read. I even printed out directions from Scuba Pete, and also some other ones too. I have been trying to accomplish this backup of Jaws all day now. This would probably be so simple to the experienced, but this is my first backup attempt. Can someone help out a newbie, please?
I have read conflicting opinions on whether to run Shrink, or DVD Decrypter first. I have tried both ways now.... In Shrink, I am trying to backup the main movie only; not any extras. I cannot figure out where to "tick", or "untick", to omit the extras. I have tried every which way now, and it seems to want to compress the whole dvd.... but I just want the main movie. How do I leave out the extras? What am I missing ???
I would be so happy if somebody can help me out here. I can't figure out the proper steps involved here, because I have so many different guides... and they conflict with each other too. So which one do I go by?
I have a Plextor 716-A drive that works flawless, and I have great results with (plextor recommended) maxell media.... so no problems there. But if I knew how to do just the main movie and leave out the extras, that would help me out so much.
Alsdo, do most of you Shrink forst.... then use Decrypter? Or is the other way better.
Man, if someone can tell me, I would be so thankful.... Thank you very much.

Decrypter should always be run first. If all you want is the main movie, just hit the "reauthor" button in shrink and it will take you to where you can just drag and drop the file you want from right to left. You can always preview the file in the window on the bottom left just to make sure it's the right one but it would most likely be labeled as "main movie".

thanks so much for your replying to me! I will try your method and see how I make out. The main movie is 2:05, so I am only trying to get the main movie without unnecessary extras. but I am having difficulty in trying to omit the damn extras.
But I'll try again with your recommendation... thank you so much for your willingness to help out this newbie. I am 51 years old, and still learning here, lol !!! Thank you!

When I run Decrypter first, it does its' thing without problems, but then I cannot open that up in Shrink; it says "the system cannot find the file specified". So I'll have to troubleshoot further I guess. Although I have had this computer for only two years, I still have quite a bit to learn, lol... But seeing how I never even sat behind one until two years ago, I have made good strides. But this burning stuff is new to me though. I've burned many audio Cd's without any problems or coasters, but DVD's are brand new to me.
But I again say thanks for helping and responding to my questions.... I will still try and see if I can figure this out.
Oh man, why didn't I learn computers back in high school in 1970 !!!

Did you rip in File Mode or ISO Mode?

Hi arniebear.. I actually tried both ways; without luck. I obviously am missing a step somewhere. Thank you for that link; I am going to print it out and follow it step by step. At least I picked an (easy) movie to backup, I think! It doesn't need too much compression as the main movie is just a tad over 2 hours. If I had dual layer disks, it wouldn't matter.... but I don't have them yet.
I will try again though.... and I'll post back here with my results. Might take me till morning though; as it's almost time to hit the sack here tonight.
It appears that my mis-steps are occuring with how to handle the file when one program is done; and it's time for the next step.... that is where I am fouling up somewhere. Then I try to locate the folder, but I cannot seem to locate it / or send it to the next step.

Thanks again for the link; I will print it out now and keep trying...

This will take me some more time, as I am going to print out this link and read it thoroughly first. I think I was getting all screwed up by reading of various ways to do this, and I was getting all the steps all botched up by reading too many people's way of doing it. Seems as though there appears to be a couple ways to do this.
I am so close too, as the damn movie is only over the limit by so very little..... but I am encountering troubles with Shrink for some reason....
It might take me til morning, but I will reply here again arnie and tell you how I am doing. Thanks so much, both of you, for helping me with this !!! I will learn this yet.

Here is Jaws just done with Shrink, first put your disk in and choose Open Disk tab

Hit Okay

Shrink will analyze

Nest screen uncheck the 2 channel audio and choose the reauthor tab

On the next screen drag title one over to under where it says DVD in the box on the right

Go to the Edit Tab on the top and then Preferences and make sure you have enable burning with Nero unchecked if you plan to burn with Decrypter

Hit Backup

On the next screen check and make sure you set your target device to iso burn with Decrypter

Oh my gosh, Arnie... SUCCESS !! I cannot say thank you enough, my friend. I was so balled up last night, reading too many conflicting ways of doing this. The link and screenshots you provided were perfect for me and easy to understand. I think my problem last night was getting way too confused by reading so many user guides, and I was getting them all mixed up with one another.
I played back my backup and it is perfect. I bpoght a brand new Pioneer dvd player too, to go along with this new Panasonic high def widescreen tv. Whew... I am slowly learnin', my friend..... But, I guess we all started out the same way!!
Thank you again so much Arnie for your willingness to take the time and help me make my first backup. I plan on doing some more today too. (I am disabled, so it gives me something to do...keeps me outta mischief, lol)
Awesome forum here, and my hat goes off to whoever owns/maintains it...I also get the monthly news updates too, as I signed up a few months ago but just got into the burning now. Thanks again Aniie... if by chance I run into any other snags, I'll come back to this thread so as not to start a new one, o.k.? Bye bye my friend, and take care!

Arnie, I knew there was something I forgot to ask... Could I ask you please, what is the preferred media type that most experienced people burn with? Is there any benefit to using "+" media or "-" media? I bought two Maxell spindles of both a couple months ago... so I already have two different media types to use here..
For this successful test burn that I just did, I used Maxell DVD+RW; the reason being that it was my first burn and in case I made mistakes I could erase it. Turned out that my burn was perfect and it plays super in my Pioneer player. Do you think I should re-burn it to a DVD+R, or DVD-R ?
I am just trying to gauge what experienced folks do.... By the way, this Plextor 716-A burner works so great for me. I have made many audio CD's; but this DVD burning is new to me though.... And my Dell E-510 computer is also brand new too, so I do have a nice speedy set-up anyways..and maybe that will be a benefit to me too.
As always, I thank you so much for your help.... I'll hold off re-burning another copy until I hear from you...

Since you have a Plex, I too have two Plex 716A's one internal and one external, you can booktype those +R's to DVD-Rom and they will play on any player. It will booktype automatically in every program once set. You can use both types of media, but with the Plex and booktyping you can just use +R media which IMHO is the better. I use Maxell media and like it, also Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden will burn like butter with the drive. Just use your PlexTools and make sure your booktype is set.

Oh wow, that's awesome info Arnie; thanks so much. I'll make the necessary booktype setting within Plextools. I didn't know you also had one; these are superb burners in my opinion (which is quite limited at this early stage..)
You've been so helpful to me and I thank you so much Arnie! I printed out that nice tutorial for safe keepings should I need to refer to it again.
Happy burning my friend !!!! Take care buddy.

@LOCOENG

Thanks, maybe I will. I have been kind of shy about putting anything in, considering all the good guides that the others have done.

I'm sure no one's feelings will get hurt, it' not like you would be posting it in an open forum stickied for everyone to see...just your little piece of hard work.

Oh yes indeed.... I hope Arnie adds it. I hope nobody took my previous comments to mean that I was knocking any other guide. What I meant was that I printed out about four different guides, and I was getting them all confused because I was trying to go by all of them simultaneously.
But once I saw Arnies and stuck to just his guide, it became more clear for me. LOL .. I have to buy Canon printer ink as I printed out his guide and screenshots and used up a good amount of ink. I was low anyways, so I depleted it, lol... Time for me to head out to Staples.

Hi Arnie; just an update here... Your tutorial has helped me immensely, Arnie... I am so thrilled to finally know how to burn these DVD's. Although I burned many CD'R audio disks, the DVD's were all new to me.
I erased that test burn I did on the DVD+RW disk, and I ran off another perfect copy on my DVD+R Maxell; and a perfect copy too.
I know you also have the same Plextor as me, so do you also get those e-mail updates from Plextor regarding new products? I just recieved an update that says Plextor is now selling high quality media, and the media is manufactured for Plextor by T.Y.
Have you tried this media at all? Might be something I will look into.....
I was going to ask you.... what do most people do about making covers for their jewel cases? My handwriting is terrible, as my hands shake. Is there any way to print out covers for these cases? I did find a website called "find my cover ", but the images appear way too large and I haven't figured out yet how to scale down the image on my Canon I-960 printer. Do you think you could advise me as to what most folks do to make covers?
As always Arnie, I say thanks so much for helping me here; it is appreciated so much!!! Take care my friend; happy burning..

Hello to you, and glad everything is working. One of the best places to get cover art is here

http://www.cdcovers.cc/covers.php

Just remember no labels on the DVDs themselves as this can cause playback problems, using a sharpie is fine or you can get a printer and then use the inkjet printable disks.

As for the Plextor disks I have heard about them, and they are supposed to be excellent. I know they were not available in the US but hopefully I will see them at the online stores. Taiyo Yuden disks are the best, and Plex really loves them although I burn Maxells with no trouble. If you want TY's you can buy Sony MIJ (Made in Japan) retail, or MIJ Fuji's which will also code as Yudens. Basically though I get my TY's from online, you can usually pick up the -R format 100 pack for under 30.00.

I use Sure Thing Label Making program but you can also do it if you have Nero, although I have not done it with that program. CD Covers though comes in the right sizes.

That's good info; thank very much... I'll be needing some media soon so I'll probably go with the T.Y.'s. I'll browse around Supermediastore or Meritline for some deals. I must say, these Maxell's burn very good too and not many errors when I check them with Plextools.
thanks for the info on the covers; that gives me somewhere to start. This is quite new to me, but I'm gettin' there slow but sure. Your tutorial was what helped me so much, as I was getting all the other ones all confused. Yours was written in a way that I could understand it clearly, and being the newbie I am I appreciated that quite a bit!
Well, I thank you again Arnie. I'll be browsing around for covers now....oh, and more media too! Take care buddy.

I guess I'll have to experiment with the settings here in this Canon I-960 printer. My covers are coming out about 2 times too large... I have to shrink them down in size, lol... I think I have to scale them to 120mm x 120mm; but I'll toy around and see what I can find out.
Man, Canon inks are expensive too, darn it all....... Hope I figure this out without me wasting too much inks!!! I'll let you know how I progress....

Another update...... I have it figured out now; I'm all set. I was having some difficulties with learning sizes and templates. But after some toying around with many types and sizes, I have it all straightened out now. Only trouble is, I'll have to go and buy more ink in about a week as I wasted a ton of it experimenting, lol....
Is there any preference in what (thickness/weight) paper is used for covers? I noticed that my traditional copy paper wrinkles a bit because of the damp ink. But, no big deal maybe as I'll just put it in a thick book overnight for flattening the wrinkles out...
Thanks.
