I have a Sony DRU-530A and I get this recorder does not support this type of disk in Nero.. I'm using DVD Shrink and I've never had a problem before. I've tried Maxwell, Verbatim, and TDK discs. Is the problem the Sony burner or Nero? I'm using Nero 6.6.0.18.. What should I check on the burner? Thanks

What disc are you talking about exactly? What happend? Do you get an error? You can put up a Nero error log to see what exactly the problem mightbe.

It actually states "this recorder does not support this type of disc"
Can I still get an error log after the application has closed?? Thanks for the help.

Did you have any successful burns in the past? If you did, what kind of media did you use? And what kind of media are you using when you get that error? What is your burner's firmware?

I've done dozens of backups on all DVD-R media.. I've recently tried Verbatim, Maxell and TDK.. My Sony DRU-530A firmware version is 2.1

Just 2.1?
It should be something like 2.1a, 2.1b...The last one available on the firmware site is 2.1g

http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer/Peripheral/Datastorage/Suppo...

An firmware update might fix some media incompatibilities.

Run a Nero Info tool and see what it says about your drive. You could try reinstalling the drive.
Your firmware is up to date, I don't know why it would not recognize
Verbatim or Maxell discs.

I did install Nero Photoshow Deluxe 4 recently. Could this be causing a problem. It was just released a couple of months ago. Has anyone had a problem with the software? On top of that, I have'nt been able to save to a dvd using the Photoshow software but I can save to cd-r. This is pretty frustrating..

Reinstall your drive. Maybe it is seen as a CD burnre only by your system.

Reinstalled the drive. I tried to burn just a title of a movie to test and I got the following error when Nero checks the disc.
"The recorder does not support this type of disc!"
"Please insert a correct disc to write to..."
Media detected in drive: unknown

I'm going to crash, if you can think of anything else to check or do, please let me know. Thanks for the help.

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Ok, the history folder does not exist? I did update all Nero files about a week ago and I believed that could have caused a problem. After reading the forums, I went back to version 6.6.0.18. Maybe it didn't install correctly. Any special instructions using the clean tool or selecting certain files. I remember seeing options. Why wouldn't I have a log??

Nero 6 Clean Tools are here - http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html

just uninstall normally, then run the Clean tools, then install 6.6.0.18..

I used the Nero clean tool and reinstalled 6.6.0.18. I went ahead and burned a music disc, that did fine. Attempted to backup a dvd and same error about burner not supporting disc. I also went to c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but only got as far as c:\program files\ahead\nero and the only two files under Nero are CDI and Uninstall.. I have no history file?? Help..

Is this a problem with the software, or burner.. I'm thinking the computer thinks its a cd drive.. I can copy to a cd, no problem..
What should I check, and how do I correct it. Thanks

i had this same problem with my a-open dvd burner. it was making back up copies of dvds for a year then all of a sudden it would only recognize cds. it turned out it was the burner itself. i took it back exchanged it and the new burner has been working great since.

When did you decide it was your burner? I emailed Sony technical support. Hopefully they will not take too long getting back with me. I would hate to buy a new burner unless I know for sure it is toast.

If you have a DVD decoder installed (I'm sure you do), you should be able to play a DVD in that drive (I'm talking an original not a copy) with no problems. If the drive is unable to recognize that DVD and therefore unable to play it, then the drive is defective.

i decided it was the burner that failed because it would never open in any dvd form when i put dvds in it. the only thing it would recognize would be audio cds.

I will try a new dvd disc, not a copy when I get home. In the mean time, I did searches for a reliable new burner without much luck. Any ideas or links to recommendations on new dual/layer burners? Thanks for all the input.. Whats the consensus on this forum? BenQ Plextor Pioneer?

I have a Plextor PX-716A and love it, there is nothing I haven't been able to do with it, and it's burned any disk (good or poor quality) I've put in it.

Check it out here (PX-716A):

Or their newest drive, here:
