My system has been nice and stable for quite a while and recently started having an issue...

I bought a new DVD burner (LiteOn SHW-160P6S : http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_product/e_shw160p6s.asp). I installed it with no issues (just replaced an older DVD-ROM). So now I have two DVD burners on the system - the new LiteOn SHW-160P6S (Dual layer) and my older SOHW-832S.

When I use the older DVD-burner, no issues. Burns at the correct speed and everything is good. However, when I try using the new burner, either the disc gets corrupted, burns way too slow (took 21 mins to burn a CD-R and it was a coaster) or it reboots my computer (no warning, just black screen then the BIOS startup).

I checked and the drive does not appear to be running in PIO mode (both drives are in DMA).

Any ideas what could be happening?

Did you make sure that jumper settings on new drive were identical to that of drive removed?

Yeah the old drive was set to SLAVE and this one is too. I just did a direct swap, kept the setting the exact same.

Does it really sound like a bad drive?

To be sure you could put it in another computer and see if it works correctly or not. That will take care of any doubt.

Try this deal 26.99 after rebate for NEC 3550
http://www.meritline.com/nec-nd-3550a-16x-dvd-burner.html

Or try the newest BenQ 1650 for 36.99
http://www.meritline.com/benq-dw-1650-16x-dvd-burner.html

I will be getting both of these !

I took your advice and got that ND-3550A (NEC). The reviews from people on NewEgg are outstanding :)

Thanks!
