What is considered acceptable for TY media? I only ask because I'm getting quality scores of 97, but when I look at the graphs (PIE/PIF), it seems to me they are not that good. On the other hand, a friend of mine is getting 93 scores using Ritek R03 media and his graphs look better than mine. What's wrong with this picture?

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

I would think that a 97% quality score is more than acceptable. Here is a graph of one of my Yudens at 97.9%

How does your compare?

It does not compare so I downloaded DVDInfo Pro. Now it makes more sense when you look at the errors and the final score. The 97 score Nero gave me is now 91 using DVDInfo. I guess it's time to get a better burner.

Well, I did changed my burner. I bought a Benq rebadge at CompUSA. Now I'm getting scans that look like yours. Actually, just a bit better.

What's the model of that rebadged benq?
What's the firmware version?

I installed Nero 6.6.0.14 on my pc and have full use of recode2/lightscribe labelmaker/and Nero speed test scans.

My first scan from my benq 1650/burned at 4x using Sony Yuden000-T02 was 97%. I know I can get higher with an 8x burn.

@ saugmon ... here is the BenQ rebadge at CompUSA
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=334...

@ hermes_vb .. you can crossflash that Hi-Val with BenQ firmware and utilize QSuite which is BenQ's awesome utility package ...

Did you read the reviews? Here's one:

While this drive can burn DVDs that it reads just fine, they are not readible by other drives. The drive burns DVDs 2-4x slower than other burners with the same media, on the same machine. The drive appears to be an OEM BenQ DQ60, but HiVal has not released the (available, for BenQ DQ60)

Maybe someone who doesn't know squat posted it's a benq DQ60? That's the dvd-ram benq,and I'd pass on it.

The model# they listed sounded like the philips-rebadged 1640?

A rebadge of a rebadge? Huh?

Another review said it was a rebadged benq 1640.

Those I/O magic 16x lightscribes are either benq 1655 or a lite-on.Possibility of another manufacturer as well? That's the way I/O Magic works, LOL

Someone posted that the Benq 1655 I/O Magic comes in a clear bag,while the Lite-on came in a pink bag-if you can somehow slightly open the box.Either way you may be ok.
I believe the HP 640I is a rebadged benq. I know their 640c drives aren't anything spectacular,even with the lightscribing.Maybe I/O Magic is using those same HP 640c's?

I see that staple's sale is a 2 week sale. Those lightscribes went the first day.

Catfreak:
After reading the rest of those reviews,someone said that the back of that compusa drive said Benq 1640. If so,then maybe not a rebadge,but the real deal-with the exact same firmware code.

My I/O Magic 16x benq drive is the same way. Once out of the box,there is no way to tell it is an I/O Magic drive. Same exact fw as the benq 1620 bulk. All my programs list it as a benq 1620.

Now on that other I/O Magic Empa drive-pc a sh*t,it had a generic code for the brand name. Total garbage! You can see why I don't go for I/O Magic drives anymore. It can be a huge gamble.

Compusa sells a Benq 1640. It's the Compusa brand burner with the model number dw1640. you'll find it above the upc in the back of the box. it's on their site too.

@Catfreak Mine it's a Norwood Micro External...

After reading a thread on CDFreaks forum, I went to the store and opened one box of the internal variety. It had a sticker that read DW1640. I've got a laptop with a NEC 6650 so I needed an external one. I didn't know for sure if the External one was a Benq too, but CompUSA has a 21-day satisfaction policy so I took a chance. Well, it turned out to be a Benq too. It's got firmware GSLB and ImgBurn allowed me to tweak it under the Benq tab.

I first thought about crossflashing to BSxx firmware to be able to use some of the "goodies" I'm missing (QScan, WOPC, etc.), but I'd void the warranty. I'm in no hurry to do so since my scans are great. I usually get 98.8 scores and the PIE graph seldom goes higher than 20. Frankly, I'm amazed with it. My NEC is not that consistent. With it I got scores that ranged from 70-97 when using DVDInfo Pro and TY media. That kinda sucks!!

.. if they're the same drive, why wouldn't they have the same specifications? .. and even if they were different, firmware could rectify that ...

@hermes_vb

Glad you are getting the scan thingie worked out and I know that you will be happy with your new drive.

I have an LG 4163B and the NEC 3550A. Both are excellent, but my next burner is going to be either a BenQ or a Plextor. I just got the NEC though and it's a great burner, but not a great drive for scanning. The LG isn't supported by DVDinfo Pro so I can't see what kind of scans that would produce.

Anyhow, it's great to burn.

Cheers.

@Catfreak and Saugmon,

I wanted to thank you both for the excellent information that you provide to me and others at this forum. Keep up the great work.
