I am trying to use DVD Shrink, ver 3.2.0.15 to rip and burn The Squid and the Whale and keep getting a message "DVD shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid DVD navigation structure." This happens as soon as I click the Open Disk icon. What is going on and is there anything I can do about it? Thanks.

I haven't done it but DVDFAB (free) should take care of it. It that doesn't work then you can couple it with VobBlanker.

This is odd since indie movies don't usually get special encryptions.

The Squid & the Whale has Sony's ARccOS & Puppetlock on it but dvd fab decrypter will handle it. I used that then Recode.

I downloaded "DVDFab Decrypter" but I'm not clear what to do with it. Do I use it to rip and then use DVD Shrink to recompile and burn or does DVDFab Decrypter do everything? Thanks for the help.

It's just to rip. Don't worry about the popup message you get after that. That's just to inform you anything you had in that directory will be deleted, which should be nothing right now. Then in Shrink go to "Open Files", rather than "Open Disc", then find where FAB put it. I think it's DVDFabdecrypter_Temp/DVD by default.

is there any way to only download certain parts of a film with DVD FabDecrypter? or do you always have to download the entire disc? also, my DVD Shrink would not even SHOW the main movie of this, The Squid and the Whale, nor Capote, only the extras (The MAIN MOVIE in the DVD Shrink screen was one of the longer extras)--what's with that? Is Sony the only compnay using this obviously new protection? But anyway, DVD FabDecrypter downloaded both of them easily, and then I picked and chose only the main film and a few extra that would not need any compression with DVD Shrink. Any OTHER programs out there like DVD Shrink that can now handle this new sort of protection, BUT that offer the same specificity as DVD Shrink--with FabDecrypter, I seem to only be able to download the entire disc, which takes longer than the mere usual 10-15-minute download of just the main film. thanks guys and gals.

mixell - is there any way to only download certain parts of a film with DVD FabDecrypter?

You mean an ARccOS decrypted copy of the DVD to your hard drive? Don't think so.. But later versions of DVD FabDecrypter will allow DVD Shrink to show the correct 'main' movie title you can re-author to burn without other garbage

then i guess i must have a later copy of DVDfabDecrypter, as when I downloaded it, DVD Shrink DID show the full main film when I pulled up DVD Shrink. So is it that DVD Shrink (which I've used for 3 years now) will NOT be able to show the main film of almost all new releases, if they all start to use Arccos? I've never encountered this new protection except now, today, on Capote and Squid. I mean, DVDFabDecrypter worked fine, but I like the specificity of DVD Shrink--with DVDFabDecrypter, I can only choose the "ENTIRE FILM/DISC" option, even with regular movies--that button does not offer any other choices--or is that because it's a free version?

full screen? as opposed to widescreen? there isn't even that option on The Squid--and why would you NOT want the original widescreen?

The later your version of DVDFab Decrypter, the more proficient is has become at eliminating the latest Sony ARccOS encryption protections. See all the Version Histories of DVDFab Decrypter here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/317652#1858778

There's only been a very few Sony ARccOS encrypted movies screwing up the files in DVD Shrink like Capote and Squid - The Cave, and I think Bewitched are a few more. You'll notice the ingeniuus DVDFab Decrypter programmer responds to a new version of it every time Sony initiates another encryption problem with their ARccOS protections.. But as I mentioned somewhere else, about 2 months ago I read a financial article commenting on Sony's CEO being upset with a Sony VP for spending so much money on encrypting their movies. Maybe that accounts for their lapse in Sony ARccOS encrypted movies for the last two months or so...

Generally speaking, maybe 1% of all movies [so far] may require DVDFab Decrypter. The other 99% can be compressed with DVD Shrink and re-authored without problems for burning through DVD Decrypter. But a big thanks goes to the DVDFab Decrypter programmer for constantly keeping up with Sony's ARccOS encryption war on making back ups..

Weird..I could not back up "The Squid and the Whale" with the latest versions of AnyDVD and CloneDVD. I tried it three times and CloneDVD got an error at 99%. I had to go "old school" with this movie and burn it with DVDFab Decrypter + DVD Shrink + DVD Decrypter with no problems. This was the first time AnyDVD and CloneDVD did not preform for me. These are two excellent programs though. Cheers!

I am also having problems with Squid and the Whale. I have AnyDVD (latest version) and CloneDVD2 (latest version). I keep getting an error at 99% for placing the movie on my HD. The disc is not dirty. Any suggestions since this combination of the two pieces of software has worked quite well until now! Thanks.

Just read atcs previous post above yours and my previous posts here and you'll understand why Sony ArCccos encrpytion is causing you burn problems using CloneDVD on Squid and Capote.

I got the dvd transferred to my hard drive with DVDFab Decryptor. However, when I try to use CloneDVD2 to burn it, all that shows up on the DVD are all the previews and other stuff. The file shows it is almost 8 gigs. CloneDVD2 only compressed it to about 6 gigs. I am not savvy enough to figure out which files not to burn to just get the movie. I do have a dual layer burner but no dual layer media as of yet (still too expensive). What do you recommend for compressing and burning? I have Nero 6, and DVD Shrink as well. Thanks.

Those phony too large file sizes and only previews w/last chapters indicated you still have Sony ArCcos encryption problems. This means you're not using the latest version of DVDFab Decrypter found here www.DVDIdle.com/free.htm [copy paste entire address]. Be sure you uninstall the old version FIRST, reboot and install new version... You will then not have those Sony ArCcos encryption problems you stated.

I tried backing this movie up just thoruhg DVD Shrink and it gave me an error. I then tried backing it up with dvdfab decrypter. it says it is successful but when I pull up the files in DVD Shrink I get this error, "Invalid data in file "F:\DVD-Movies\Squid and the Whale\DVD\VIDEO_TS\VTS_08_1.VOB". I then tried VobBlanker and when I try to load the dvd into VobBlanker I get "Error: Cell Not Found" and the movie will not load in. Do What am I doing wrong? Is the original disk bad?

Well I re-installed dvdfab decrypter and it worked. It seems that I always have to re-install it in order for dvdfab decrypter to work? What is up with that?
