Is there an easier way to do backup my DVD movies? Here's what I have been doing.

1. Rip movie using dvd shrink into video_ts and audio_ts folders.
2. Burn this into an image using Nero
3. Burn the image onto a dvd using dvd decrypter (or now dvd fab).

It takes awhile - is there a way to speed this up? Can any of these programs do two of these steps at once?

Thanks - easily the best forum on the web for this.

Try creating the iso with Shrink and then burning the iso with Decrypter. Shrink can automate this process. When you select "Backup!" in Shrink, select "The Create iso and burn with Decrypter" option.

Under 'select backup target', I'm seeing the 'create iso image file', but nothing about burning with decrypter. i have the free version - could this be why?

Also, if I create the 'iso image' is this the same thing I'm doing with Nero? (see step #2 in initial post) Looks like I could use shrink to create the image and skip step #1 - does this sound correct?

You can either burn with Nero, DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn. You "don't" need to do both step 2 & 3. Choose to go with only one route (i.e DVD Decrypter or Nero) and you'll be fine.

For me, I prefer Nero Burning Rom to burn all of my VIDEO_TS and DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO file. However, the choice is yours.

Here's what I primarily used and still use on a daily basis:

<1> rip the movie into hard drive via DVDFAB Decrypter
<2> process & blank out unwanted junks via VobBlanker
<3> encode my VIDEO_TS file/movie with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP or transcode with Nero Recode 2 with "AA + HQSR + assign best quality to main movie"
<4> burn my final VIDEO_TS file/movie with Nero Burning Rom

I'm "not" into anything under 45 or 30 minutes of ripping & backing up movies/dvds. All I care is "quality and longevity" that's all.

Best of lucks to all and happy burning!

Thanks - haven't used Nero to burn the video_ts files before. What mode should I use to burn these? It looks like it wants to burn a CD-R based on the available space I'm seeing under mini-dvd and data....

You should be using DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 and DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 for the Autoburn to work.

If you are using DVDFAB Decrypter then this is a completely different program. Shrink will not auto-burn with DVDFab Decrypter.

An ISO is a disc image so they are generally the same regardless of the program that created them. You can make an ISO with Shrink and then burn it with Nero. No problem. Or burn your VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS with Nero Burning ROM. That's how I do it as well.

You have to switch Nero to from CD to DVD. Do you have the full version of Nero...?

I need to know if you have Nero Burning Rom installed. Go to Programs > Nero and see if you can find it.

DVD-Video is correct. I always use ImgBurn for ISOs but that sounds correct.

Here is a quick guide for Nero Burning ROM (files).

Top left, click DVD.
Below that, click the DVD-Video icon.
This should now show the ISO tab.
Uncheck all the "Relax Restrictions" boxes.
Down at the bottom, click "New".

Using the File Browser on the right, find your VIDEO_TS folder and open it by clicking.

A big list of all the files appears on the right browser window.
Right click any of the files and from the menu, select "Select All".

This turns all the files blue.

Right click them again and select "Copy to Compilation".

They all appear on the left.

From the menu at the top, select "Recorder", select "Choose Recorder" and then choose the recorder you plan on using from the menu.

Put in a blank DVD and let it get spun up.

Click the burn icon at the top.

For your first attempt at this check the "Simulation" box and uncheck "Write".

Set your write speed to 4X.

At the bottom select the "Simulate" button to start the simulation.

When this finishes, make sure you save your Nero log when asked. We may need it!!

Perfect, I'll try this tomorrow after picking up some disks. Two questions in the meantime:
1. After I 'copy compilation' do they need to go into the 'Video_ts' folder on the DVD-video I'm creating? By default I'm showing a red folder in the area they show up after copying the compiliation.

2. Sounds like I don't need to deal with any ISO files - just rip using shrink and then use Nero to burn. Am I missing something here?

Thanks again.

If you have a fairly recent version of Nero then once you copy to compilation you are ready to burn.

You are not missing a thing!

Please note that you can have Shrink open Nero for you.

You simply go into Shrink Edit > Preferences > File I/O and check the "Enable burning with Nero". It may even be checked already.

When you start the Shrink "Backup!" process, just make sure you have your burner set as the target.

Then you would just insure you have a blank disc installed in your burner and start the backup process.

When Shrink is done encoding, it will open Nero and start the burn process without you lifting a finger.

You should do a simulation first though....

I always always always do a simulated burn with Nero if I have not used a particular version or if I've made changes that may effect it. Try doing that first, just to sort out any problems without making a coaster.
You do need a blank in your burner though. Nothing is written on it during the simulation. It just spins.

You do not need to use a whole movie for a simulation. Use Shrink to Re-author just a couple of chapters. It makes things go a lot quicker.

If you have not cut out chapters before, look for two opposing blue arrows after you select Re-author. That opens the "Set start/end frames" menu which is a pretty cool Shrink feature.

Ok, just went to do the simulation in Nero and it stated :"DVD-Video compliance test failed. The resulting DVD-Video might be unplayable. Do you want to continue?"

Is this just becasue it's a simulation or is this another issue?

Normally that happens if you didn't click the DVD-Video icon when you first open Burning ROM. It should look like this:

Got it. I tried again, but this time moved into the actual video_ts folder and it worked. Good to go amigo!
