Not sure which board this belongs in...

If I'm going to use Swap Magic on my v9 unmodded PS2, do I need to do the romeo mod?

I expect to use only authentic Taiyo Yuden discs for my backups. Should this keep my laser from frying, or do I have to do the mod anyway?

you also need to buy a fliptop case, swap magic alone will not play your back ups.
that or make a slidecard, but that method is just a pain to use.
Taiyo Yudens are the supposed king of all media (sorry howard)
your laser will be just fine. The older models did not really have the problems with laser burn out like the slimline.

Yes, I'm getting a fliptop. I was asking because since I was going to have my PS2 open anyway I might as well try soldering a wire while I'm at it.

So my laser should be fine then? It really isn't necessary for me to re-route the power for the laser after all?

This IS a v9 and I keep seeing people on other boards saying that this mod is totally necessary, but they only seem to be saying that in conjunction with using a modchip... so it's left me a littile confused.

well i don't know if it is needed unless it is just for
the V9, someone who has one /with a mod chip will hopefully chime in with answers. But i had a V5/6 and V12 and the V12 needed a laser fix, but the older models didn't. but i did a little searching and did see where it said that the V9 & 10 have been known to have laser problems with modchips, and that is a laser fix of some kind so better safe than sorry i guess.

That's my problem. I wanted to know if I need to do the mod even if I'm not going to be using a modchip on this thing.

I can't find out anywhere if using Swap Magic and backup discs will cause the same problem. I'm assuming it will, but I want to be absolutely sure on this before I go soldering anything on my PS2.

I have a v9 with a fliptop and Swap Magic and have been using it for about 18months with no problems, and no need for any soldering. At least on mine.

That would be great if it applies to me as well. As far as I know, my laser is still in perfect to great condition and my v9 is over a year old. Could you tell me what media you use btw? Scratched or in good condition?

I might go without soldering. If anything dies on me I'll just go out and buy a new PS2 :D

Hi m8

Not sure what you mean about scratched or good condition, but as far as media goes, I usually use ritek or ridisc with the G05 dye. They are fairly cheap, but I have had little problems with them, either for PS2, Xbox or DVD.
