Some friends of mine have old real to real tapes from obviously ages ago. Home made movies. I have no equipment to play them on, but if I did, how would I go about capturing and eventually burning them onto DVD. Does anyone have any ideas?

Check out this page: http://www.digitalvideoclub.com/tutorials/filmtransfer.php
I have doen all my movies using the do-it-yourself method with a glass screen and I ended up with perfect quality.
I fou don't want to go through the hassle: there are numerous companie around that will do it for you as well.

Very very interesting, what a magical way to get it done. I am so glad I asked the question and I even more glad you took the time to answer. Thanks, and now I must try and find a projector to try this method. Where on the net would I find some of these materials that are required?

In the method that is described, you need three things.
1. A projector. Your best shot is to buy one second hand on eBay. Make sure that you buy one fowhich light bulbs are still available.
2. The glass screen. The only source I know is the german company that is mentioned in the article: http://www.glasscreen.com/index_en.htm
3. A digital camcorder.

Be aware that setting the whole system up and doing the transfer is a time consuming job. You only want to do it when you haev fun doing it and you want to have absolute control over the end quality... In other cases you may consider to use a commmercial service.

I appreciate your efforts and advise. This has now turned out to become my hobby (video stuff), so if there is no fun, then I should move on. How much would a projector cost? I have a digi camcorder.

They cost whatever people are willing to pay for it. There are probably millions of people around the world that have an old projector on the attic and when they decide to clean up they put it on eBay to get at least some cash or make somebody else happy. Most of the time the cost for postage is higher than the value of the projector, so try to locate one close to where you live or ask around in your neighbourhood..
BTW: be aware that there are two different types Normal8 and Super8. make sure that you get the right one, but there are projectors that take both. (I assume that you don't have 16mm)
