Okay Doc to celebrate your return I burned one of the Sony TYG03 disks at 16X and it works fine, no playback issues whatever and a 99.4 score on DVDinfo Pro, using a Sony DRU-800a, 1.0 Gig of RAM and a PIV 1.9 Gig processor. Prior to this I usually burn at 8X for the 16X media and 6X for the 8X media, will be trying full tilt for a few to see if the standalones can tolerate it.

@catfreak: Thanks for the info on faster burn speeds. I feel pretty comfortable trying that. BTW: You say you crossflashed your 1655 to a 1650? What firmware did you use and what utility program allowed you to do this? I don't think I'll be using my drive for Lightscribe, so I don't mind losing that functionality to get a better overall burner/reader.

@blivetNC: Thank you also for posting some results. Glad to hear you're having success!

Done and done! Thanks, catfreak. I'm looking forward to trying it out. I wasn't really too happy with how the 1655 firmware was handling my TYs (it did great with Verbs though).

@blivetNC

good to hear of your success with the TYG03s, you are doing much better than i did with the earlier batches when they first came out~ while i do have a few hundred left, i am only hoping that these "more recent" batches have been improved upon since the time i first starting testing them...and for YOUR sake as well as many others that HAVE purchased the Sony branded MIJ Taiyo Yuden produced 16x DVD-R TYG03s too~ :)

on a side note, just tested a few 16x Taiyo Yuden DVD+R YUDEN000T03 on my Benq 1650, was a little disappointed in the results...disc quality scores range from mid 90s to low 90s burning @8x-16x respectively~ :(

after these results, i tried a few more on my Benq1640 following the same burning patters for the discs, the scores improved marginally from high 90s to mid 90s burning @8x-16x respectively again.

i'm down to 3 YUDEN000T03s now from my initial 10 sample pack from Taiyo Yuden, i called them and spoke to my rep after obtaining these results, they told me the following (as close as possible to duplicate a telephone conversation on my part):

"Taiyo Yuden has noted early user issues and produced an even better disc for the later batches. The sample-pack (10 discs) that you received was from our earliest batches, but consider yourself very lucky to have even received them as they are NOT available in the U.S. yet. Indeed a thing to note for users that an even newer batch received at a later date can be classed as slightly better still."

that's basically the jist of what they told me, so you can pretty much assume that they are aware of the issues with the earlier batches (this holds true with the 16x DVD-R TYG03s from my past experience as well)...being the reputable company Taiyo Yuden is, they are aware with "early batch issues" and have continued to raise the bar for the newer batches of 16x rated media...

as far as 16x speed media has come these days, you can expect quality 16x rated media from taiyo yuden for the future...at this point in time, FOR ME PERSONALLY, i will stick with the 8x rated TYs (YUDEN000T02) and will not purchase the early batches of the 16x DVD+R (YUDEN000T03) when they come out in the U.S.; if this "test" of mine has taught me anything, i have come to MY OWN CONCLUSION that for TY media, wait a little while so they can iron out the small bugs from their initial batches before stocking up on a specific format and rated speed~ :)

as to the TYG03s you got, they've been out long enough for TY to iron out all the problems with them (namely, the higher PIF scores due to the dye back then when i was using the early batches compounded with "not up-2-date firmware" (manufacturer's fault) for my drives at the time to support/handle the new 16x media)...present day~ :) guess that's what i get for being the "guinea pig" at times with media~ but if i didn't, i wouldn't be known as docTY now would i? LOL

docTY~

have a good one all
