Hello all :)
I have searched through thr forums but didn't see the answer to this. I am new to DL DVD burning and just wondering about media. For standard DVD burning (the non DL kind), I always use Verbatim DVD-R and have never had any issues.
Is this the same for DL DVDs? I see there are DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL. Is one better than the other? More compatible? My goal is to have the most compatible with standalone DVD players in my house.
If I missed the answer to this question in another post or section, please let me know. Thank you! :)

I think most people will tell you that the best DL media is Verbatim. DVD+R you can booktype them to DVD-ROM, if your burner does booktype, so you can have greater compatibility with standalone players.

EmptyG,
I believe the answer is out there in a few other threads, but the Verbatim DVD+R DLs seem to be the most popular among the dual layer DVDs. They are Made in Singapore, and from what I know (and have learned from this site), that's a good thing!
Stay away from the Memorex DLs. Not good.
Local retailers usually have 10 pks of the DL Verbs for $19.99. $2.00/disc, not too bad.
The few back-ups I have made with my laptop and external burner (using Verb DLs) have turned out real well.
To my knowledge, I haven't seen the DVD-R DLs out yet... others can comment on that. But, changing your booktype setting to 'DVD-ROM' before burning, increases the chance that the disc will play in almost any player. You're basically 'fooling' the player to think it's a DVD-ROM instead of, really, a +R.
Just thought I'd comment since I seen the thread. Others can probably offer more technical info. on DL discs, but I agree the Verbs are tops as of right now.
Take care,
Gregg

What's the brand name and model # of your DVD-RW drive?
I booktype all my plus media: +r/+r DL/and +r RW. In the world of stand alone compatability,it really helps.Especially for rw and dl media.Stand alone players have a harder time reading the rw and dl backups.
Make sure it is verbatim dl media. They are the highest quality dl media in the world.

Well my burner WAS a LiteOn SHW-160P6S, but I have had nothing but problems with it - so I just oredered a new one: the NEC 3550A (since it has such great overall reviews).
Thanks for the tip about the DVD+R DL Verbatims! I use Verbatim DVD-R single layer ones now and love them. :)

@EmptyG
I have a NEC 3550A. Although the original firmware does not support booktyping, there is great firmware support for Nec http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3550/ I got a mod one so I could booktype the DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM for great compatibility with any players. I am very pleased with the burner, I have been using Verbatim, Maxell MIJ and MIT, and Sony MIJ( all DVD+R X8), they all work great!
Best of luck!

Thanks for all the help! :)
There is no office max within 30 miles of here, but Best Buy did have a 25 pack of Verbatim DVD+R DL for $39.99 (which is about 2 bucks a disc) so I grabbed some of those. :) The NEC burner gets here from NewEgg today, so tonight is my first test of it.
cyprusrom - by any chance, do you have some instructions for me to upgrade the firmware so I can booktype these discs to DVD-ROM? I see a lot on that site you linked to but am still a little confused.
Thanks! :)

I believe the NEC 3550A will booktype DVD+R DL media (but not dvd5's) to dvd-rom with stock f/w. I would still flash it with some modified f/w (liggy & dee's) to enable it to booktype all DVD+R media to dvd-rom.

Nec 3550A does support booktyping for DVD+R DL with original firmware.
If you want to be able to booktype the single layer +Rs, you have to get one of the modified ones.
You can get any of those that say "bittsetting firmware" in that list, for NEC 3550A. Follow the flashing guidelines and good luck!
I have version 1.Y5 (it also enebles some media speedups).
