I have been told that by using a programme called DVD Shrink (Freeware) it will copy all appropriate files from DVD movies on to the hard disk.

By then using Pinnacle Instant Copy it is possible to copy the file on the hard disk to a blank DVD - or - RW.

To Gadgetcan,
Been there , seen it , got the video lol .I had mucho trouble, spending money at £1/min , so I took mine to local comp shop , bribed them to put in a pc/tv in card, came to £69 in all , including pc card , they put Nero express on as a bonus.could tell you I found Datawrite Classic yellows DVD-R work well for me .otherwise if the shop cannot fix it , get them to give you a letter to that effect and write to the monkeys at "Time" and enclose a copy , and ask that they take the thing back !.I use TDK DVD-RW ok , they work

It works fantastic!

You can include all types of soundtrack or omit them, whatever.

You also adjust the quality of the picture slightly, a bit like when you save a jpeg. It really is worth having.

mikpatkeo...put your rom as a slave to the hard drive and your burner on ide2.This is how i set mine IDE1= hard drive master and dvd rom slave.
IDE2 dvd burner master and cd-r/rw burner as slave...be sure to use the ata 100 ribbon cables if not already used this works fine on mine and the other 2 computers i have fitted dvd burners too.You have to also remember that the hard drive will run at the slowest setting so if you have a ata66 rom then the hard ddrive will drop back to 66 although that hasnt been the case up to yet on any i have fitted....

I've found similar probs with my matshita SW 9581 drive. It seems to intermittently recognise the TDK DVD-RW disks I've tried, but when it does says there is only 4.38 gb on them and currently it won't recognise them at all.

I'm guessing its driver related... any ideas how to solve this?

P.S. yes it is a Time p.c.

even though all dvd disks say they are 4.7gb you can only ever fit just under 4.4gb

Ok I think I've sorted out my driver problems.

I downloaded the "uniDRV_1_18_1" driver from here: http://www.roxio.de/english/support/drv_user.html and after installing it the Matshita drive recognised the TDK DVD RW disks again and didn't report error when I quick formatted it.

Furthermore I have now used it successfully to write to. No problems!

Hopefully this will be of use to anyone else having similar problems with their Matshita drives...let me know.

Hey, i have had a few of the same problems here , managed to burn Pulp Fiction onto a Datasafe Yellow Dye DVD-RW which was supposedly impossible to do, and infact is the only copy ive ever been able to do!!

My main problem is that the error message that now comes up during a burn is "power calibration" my initial thought was ribbon cables, primary, slave etc etc - but if anyone can point to the real answer please feel free!!

Cheers

Re :- POWER CALIBRATION ERROR
if you look around for more info, like Dr.Watson , that error report , as near as I can remember says "media in drive is dirty", but we all know thats not the case. You can Email Pinnacle , if you run the instantcd/dvd software and look in the "info" panel , register and you can email Pinnacle for help ...I just think the drive is so picky its not true.Would help if "Time" recalled all the computers, which they will not!

Power Calibration Errors are normally caused by the type of media you are using i.e cheaper brands of blanks. If no luck there a firmware upgrade could be on the cards

using google to search power calibration error i came across this

From Iomega's website :

You may encounter power calibration errors each time you use your CD-RW drive if you are using poor quality media.

Your CD-RW drive uses a power calibration process that adjusts the recording laser power to the optimum level for each recordable disc you insert into the drive. Each CD-R and CD-RW disc contains a reference value for laser power in a preformed track, which helps the CD-RW drive determine the ideal laser power. There is also a special area on each CD-R and CD-RW disc set aside for the CD-RW drive's laser to power up to the level required to burn the disc. If the laser power calibration process fails, a power calibration error will occur.

Thanks for the replys guys,

i have since then been able to copy pulp fiction and reservoir dogs to the datasafe yellow discs. All it took was a suck and a blow - in this case a hoover and a hair-dryer!
Using ulead movie fatory i made a copy to DVD-RW then using Nero Express - wrote to the DVD-R. Took a while but it worked. Just gonna have to find an easier way...do we know for a fact that TIME will not recall these systems ?

Cheers

Same PC here. I got some Packard Bell RW discs and they work fine. As do the "White Label" DVD-R I brought (Although compatability with some DVD players is sketchey and it wont work on ps2) but movies are fine. I use a combination of SmartRipper, DVD Shrink and Nero and all seems to be going well.

i just double clicked on the icon and let it install..everything worked fine after that...dvd x copy xpress is a stunning tool, never fails...you can get the trial version off www.download.com..or off afterdawn, lets you copy 3 dvd's...nero's a good tool, very tempremental though, best not to have any other burning software installed at the same time...i'm using a pack of datawrite classic yellows, almost finished the pack and they wouldn't work this time last week...really cheap from rambox too...

I wish I'd looked at this site before I'd made the purchase, same pc, same company TIME" same problems, same frustrations. Thanks for the guidance it will still come in usefull. I decided in the end to buy my own copy of xp home and install afresh which I've done but Im now having problems with finding the right drivers for the hardware configeration ie. video controller, display, graphics card. I know this is off subject but would appreciate an oppinion before taking it to a shop. Thanks
