You guessed it. Same model PC from Time, same DVD-RAM drive. However, I haven't tried burning anything yet and it seems that quite a few people have had problems. To avoid said problems, can you recommend what blank DVD's to use which you haven't had any problems with and what software was used to rip/burn? Also, can someone briefly explain the difference between the drives: DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R?

Thanks.

Some thoughts on our Matshita drive .I have shot a wedding video with analogue camcorder, edited the footage, and burnt it to DVD-R (Datawrite Classic yellows), 5 times on the bounce with no failures , but I used Arcsoft Showbiz for authoring the footage, and also its output for burning the discs, oh and btw the Showbiz is excellent for combining .mpeg and .AVI films , where they are on separate files , like part 1 of 3 etc, and it will join them as a whole and burn to DVD , last one I did this way was 2 hours 11 mins long, and quality is superb.Forgot to add Pinnacle software is still on computer as is Nero Express.I have found a good DVD-R medium and am sticking with it, cheap enough at about £1 per unit via the web.

DVD-RAM is a DVD disc encased in a cartridge , but of no real use to us , very expensive and limited application as it must be played in its cart, in the computer

DVD-R are the type of DVDs for this computer, they are a write once medium , playable in most stand alone DVD players
DVD-RW are re-writable DVDs for our computer, can be rewritten multiple times , usually only playable on our computer , or on stand alone DVD players that have the capability to handle them

DVD+R discs , have a different substrate makeup from ours , no good in our drive , so dont buy them and waste money.

Daz - Funny you should mention that about the Reload CD. I tried reloading today for the first time and the damn CD is blank. I eventually got intouch with Time but I got put on hold for 20+ minutes, I just hung-up in the end. My e-mail address is g_2289@hotmail.com

Send me a mail so we can sort something out and I'll send you a cheque to cover the costs.

Cheers!

essexman - Thanks for clearing that up. I got a little confused. Its just that the drive says DVD-RAM so I didn't know what discs to get.

Thanks again for the info, Guys. You've been a great help and it is greatly apprecaited. As I said, I haven't tried burning yet but now that I have the update and know what discs to get I can't see there being a problem, and if there is, you know where I'll come! :)

The saga continues.....

try using Nero to format the disc mate, if that doesn't work the disc is no good...get yourself a datawrite dvd - rw green to practise on ( about £2)..i had all these probs till i updated the driver, datawrite classic yellows seem the best so far though...any one else on here got the pc on buy now pay later??...maybe we should give time something to worry about......

Check out this site:

www.blankdiscshop.co.uk

You can get a tub of 25 Red Datawrite DVD-R's for £17.25 which works out about 69p per disc. You can also pick up a "Sample Pack" for £7.99 which contains one disc of several types so you can try them out on the burner to see which gives the best result.

Cheers Dazz ! Lol, system restore is a handy app. !!! Still trying to get the driver update to work. Anyone who has a proper understanding of how it works should post a walkthrough of how to work the program because its not just a simple driver update - its a seperate program ! Ask the mod's to make it a sticky if its good enough.

Cheers y'all

some feedback on those sample DVD-Rs from UKDVDr @ 6 for £8.66 (including 1st class recorded del) .Got 100 percent burn sucess!!! .All these disks will play in my stand alone player,( El cheapo Beadle thing £50 inc discs), and also my neigbours more expensive Sony DVD player, with the exception of the orange bulkpaq , which has a momentary "freeze" in my player, same place a every time, but plays ok in my neighbours and in computer aok.Did not use Pinnacle ,I dont trust it now , (although it is still on my computer,) but used the Nero v 6 burning engine , and the burning part of Sonic MyDVD 4.0.I found that a treat too to join .avi and .mpeg files together and burn as a whole.I am now about to order up a spindle of discs from the above company.Anyone wants more info please p.m. me .I will try and help

Just installed a matshita dvd-ram sw-9581 drive from Ebuyer in place of my normal DVD drive. I've set the master/slave jumper to slave just as the DVD was set up as. I've also got the existing CD/RW in the machine and left it as is. I haven't tried writing to it yet - Nero 5.5 seems to recognize the drive and it comes up as DVD-RAM Drive (F:) when I click on my computer. I've loaded down the latest drivers for it at
http://panasonic.co.jp/mke/support/dvdram/lim/eoem/ (I've got Windows XP Home)
but I can't get it to read any of my current load of DVD's. Do I need to change a setting? If you right click on the drive in My computer and select the Hardware Tab with the approropriate drive selected and the click on properties you then get a few more tabs one of which is DVD-REGION - do I need to set this to anything? It says it gives you 5 goes at changing the setting. But do I need to set it to anything? Help urgently required here!
