Well just to let you know its not all bad news, I have got my drive working now and not has a problem for some time.

I've burnt onto TDK dvd-rw disks and Bulkpaq "orange" 4x dvd-r disks, the latter from the www.Blankdiscshop.co.uk 25 for £11.65 + vat.

Apart from Pinnacle I also have Nero Express on the pc so I don't think these are incompatible.

Did have a lot of messing with the drivers but have it sorted now. I found that the "Roxio" driver seemed to sort out most of my problems.. the address is listed on a previous posting the file name is "uniDRV_1_18_1"

I also found an updated Matshita application "XPDrv3083NEN" which I'm not sure did anything. Last time I had a problem I uninstalled the drivers and it then reinstalled itself on next re boot. It's been fine ever since.

Good luck

I've had this Time powerstation for 4 months or so. The Matshita dribe worked originally but after running for hours on one backup it failed - any time i try to access it the green light comes on but the drawer won't open. It will open manually but won't recognise any disc. The drive is recognised in the Bios and in Windows. I installed a purchased version of the Pinnacle softwar and still am getting nowhere. Any advice would be much appreciated. even if it is to ditch the drive.

Hi
I have just spent £20.00 phoning time regarding the sw-9581. A total waste of time. I feel totally cheated and will never deal with thwm again.

Rather than muck about with Time I have installed a Pioneer A106 which has worked perfectly first time.
I intend to return the Matsushita indicating that I will not use Time again.

If you are thinking of buying a computer from TIME Beware! Unless you are prepared to take out an extended warranty you will not be able to get your machine repaired under the 12 months warranty. Here's how it works. I have a fault with the SW-9581 drive. I have been through all the usual tests of new drivers and software etc. I have been working with computers since the late 70's so I think I know what I'm doing. I phoned the customer services dept and they said I had to go to the hardware help line (at a pound a minute) to get a returns number. I asked why I couldn.t just send the machine back and was told if I did it would be placed in a warehouse and after 3 months it would be scrapped if I did not collect it. I was then told it would take less than a minute to give me a returns number, how wrong she was. Once on the hardware help line, much of it dead time as they checked this and that, they would not give me a returns number until they had gone through all the possible faults. 8 minutes and 8 pounds poorer I was told it was a software fault and should go to the software help line (still at a pound a minute). After checking that mine was the first complaint they had ever had about this drive (all you good people who say they have contacted TIME must therefore be liars) I was told to re-format the hard drive. (Totally unaceptable) Because I was not prepared to do this they would have nothing more to do with me and rang off. So £20 worse off and no nearer to a solution I have orderd a new drive from elsewhere. This is of course what TIME want. I feel that this is sharp practice and prevents me from my rights under the consumer act. I intend to contact Trading Standards and sent a copy of this text to the Watchdog TV programme. I would appreciate back up from anyone else who has suffered at the hands of TIME COMPUTERS. Please get in touch.

Hi Pipex.
I am new to all this and from reading these forums went for Datawrite Classic yellow DVD-R discs. Made my first backups yesterday using DVD Shrink and Nero 6 and they worked!! Not only burnt without problems but played on my DVD player too. They are worth trying - worked out about £20 incl P&P for a tub of 25. Out of interest - what is the Time software you are trying to use?

Went for the same disks myself Youngers, and made 5 exact copies of DVD films using ONLY RecordNowMax ver.4.50. So no need to complicate myself using DVDShrink etc. The problems I have are with compiling DVD's e.g. downloading a movie off the net and trying to fit it on to disc. Will give shrink a try.

As for the Datawrite Yellow discs - these are re-runs of Datasafe Yellows and you'll usually find 3 in 25 wont work, and can sometimes be quite unreliable however they do work. I even managed to do an exact copy of Manhunt fo rmy PS2, and no I wasnt using any fancy software - just RecordNowMax :) Im going to try the new Datasafe Black 4 x as they seem to be the Daddys at the moment.

Other than my Shrinking problem my drive managed to convert itself from NTFS to FAT32. Anyone know a way of doing this so that I dont f*ck my PC?

Try Nero 5 - works for me also. But I recommend everyone getting Stomps; RecordNowMaxx ver.4.50. Great piece of software in making exact copies of your Original or copy DVD's.
It's also really simple to use.

Hi Beach

I have had numerous problems with Time with the Powerstation I bought several months ago..... Firstly when I received the PC it didn't work (License problems with XP!) so I had to ring Technical Help and they sent me the reload CD for free. This cured the problem.

I have indeed got the Matshita 9581 and surprise surprise it doesn't work - Bought some Mirror DVD-RW Disks x 5 (Before finding this forum and the TDK recommendation) - Let me know how you go on with Watchdog - You have my support.

Hi Beach,
You are quite right in what you say , the machine does not do what Time say it does on the box.The £1 a minute support is no more than a scam , to dissuade you from complaining, and getting the machine corrected.
We all need to draft a master letter and each on send it to Time (phoning is no good, they can ignore complaints like that).I have even been into the shop in Bluewater Kent , where I bought mine ,to complain of the racket , and was told "we have not received any complaints about the DVD drive".Perhaps the letter should ideally come from a solicitor , but thats going to cost half the price of a new drive.Ideally we all need a robust DVD burner , and a method of running in NTFS file system if we wish.

Hi All,

Today my new Pioneer 106 arrived. Worked OK. immediately. Have now burned 10 dvd's without a hitch. BUT I am determined not to let TIME off the hook. I am trying to get a directors address and phone number from companies house, thought I would give him a ring at home on a Sunday evening to complain. As soon as I have the number I will publish it here.

I have just found this forum discussing how crap the time pc is in particular the problem with the matshita dvd drive. I have complained in writing to time (over five weeks ago) and surprise surprise have not received any reply. Since then I have had to reimage my pc as it due to other problems. My letter also requested that they send me a driver disk but that appears to have floundered on deaf ears. I would be very grateful if anyone could supply me with a copy of any driver disk.
Many thanks
Send any details for driver disk to spooneyi@yahoo.co.uk

I have yet to have a problem with burning. But what i do have a problem with, is the card reader not being recognised. Sometime it does, sometimes it does not.

Does anybody have a install disc for sale? Mail me @ keanoboy@hotmail.com

Hi,

Just found this site while looking for a driver update for my Matshita dvd drive (an appropriate name if ever there was one).

It's good to see I'm not the only one suffering with this damn thing. Mine seemed to work fine for a few weeks... now it's not reading any discs... going to try updating the driver (thanks to the link provided in this thread)

Beach... I've been there mate so many times... and I always get to talk to a tech who doesn't have the best grasp of the English language, which only goes to compound the problems I'm trying to get sorted.

Dazzhill, I'd also be really grateful if you could sort me out a copy of the restore disc, the idea of paying to have one really pisses me off... cheers mate.

My email addy is:
talk2eon@msn.com

Thanks for all the info guys... and I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this thread.
