good morning have ye had ye spot of chocolate and a smoke and a cup of coffee this morning..

Cocoa, not tea, calms blood pressure, study says
Mon Apr 9, 4:12 PM ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Some may see a cup of tea as soothing but chocolate is more likely to lower one's blood pressure, German researchers reported on Monday.

Foods rich in cocoa appear to reduce blood pressure but drinking green and black tea may not, according to an analysis of previously published research in the Archives of Internal Medicine, published by the American Medical Association.

The drop in blood pressure among participants who consumed cocoa products for at least two weeks was in the same range as achieved by someone taking drugs commonly prescribed to control high blood pressure.

The fall in blood pressure credited to cocoa could be expected to reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks by 10-20 percent, the report said.

Both cocoa and tea contain polyphenols, a class of chemicals known to help prevent cardiovascular disease that are present in most fruits and vegetables. But cocoa has a different type than tea -- procyanids -- that appear to be more active.

Currently, patients with high blood pressure are urged to eat more fruits and vegetables, although cocoa and tea products account for the bulk of total polyphenol consumption in Western countries, the study said.

But don't start gobbling up chocolate bars just yet, wrote study author Dirk Taubert of the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany.

Treats such as dark chocolate might be substituted for other high-calorie desserts, based on the study's findings, but "we believe that any dietary advice must account for the high sugar, fat and calorie intake with most cocoa products.

"Rationally applied, cocoa products might be considered part of dietary approaches to lower hypertension risk," he wrote.

Coffee Lovers, Smokers at Lower Parkinson's Risk

April 9, 2007 03:55:47 PM PST
Yahoo! Health: Addiction News

MONDAY, April 9 (HealthDay News) -- Could smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee protect you from Parkinson's disease?

That's the startling suggestion of a new U.S. study of families that also found NSAID use has no impact on the disease risk.

Previous studies have reported that consuming caffeine, smoking and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen may help prevent Parkinson's disease, according to background information in the study. But there's been little family-based research done to examine these links.

The new study, led by researcher Dana B. Hancock of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., included 356 Parkinson's patients (averaging about 66 years of age) and 317 of their family members (averaging almost 64 years of age).

The people with Parkinson's disease were 44 percent less likely to report ever smoking and 70 percent less likely to report current smoking compared with unaffected relatives, the study authors found.

"Increasing intensity of coffee drinking was inversely associated with Parkinson's disease," they added. "Increasing dosage and intensity of total caffeine consumption were also inversely associated, with high dosage presenting a significant inverse association with Parkinson's disease."

The study found no link between NSAID use and Parkinson's disease.

The findings are published in the April issue of the journal Archives of Neurology.

It's not known how smoking or caffeine consumption may help reduce the risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

"Given the complexity of Parkinson's disease, these environmental factors likely do not exert their effects in isolation, thus highlighting the importance of gene-environment interactions in determining Parkinson's disease susceptibility," the study authors wrote. "Smoking and caffeine possibly modify genetic effects in families with Parkinson's disease and should be considered as effect modifiers in candidate gene studies for Parkinson's disease."

I'm loving being 17...

I finally quit smoking... completely. Went through a pretty rough withdrawal over Easter weekend but I haven't had any fierce nicotine cravings yet. Already noticed a calming effect when I sit down and relax vs lighting up a cigarette :)

good night all,i leave ye students with this

Quote:
Grade change form
Date:

Dear Professor,

My grade in ____ should be raised from _____ to ____ because:

1. There must be a mistake somewhere.

2. I was not well at the time of the examination.

3. My mind always goes blank during an examination.

4. This mark ruined my prospect of getting a scholarship.

5. This is the only course in which I received a poor grade

6. This mark grieved my mother (or Father). whose pride I am.

7. Conditions in the room were not conductive to concentration.

8. The examination was unfair and unfairly distributed over the subject

9. I have to work after school and nights; therefore I should be given a break.

10. I am married; therefore, I should be given a break.

11. I would have done much better if I had taken the examination give to one of the other sections.

12. Several people around me copied from my paper during the examination yet they received higher marks than I did. Surely this is not fair.

13. The reason I did not do better is because I am very honest. I do no wish to say anything against any other members of the class.

14. I know many of the class members who do not work as hard as I do an who got a better grade. I am recognized among my classmates as a good student - you just ask any one of them.

15. The question were ambiguous, and therefore, my answers should be graded according to the reasonable interpretations that I made of your questions.

16. Many of the questions could not be answered with straight facts; they were matters of opinion. I do not believe I should be penalize just because my opinions differ from those of the instructor.

17. I have studied this subject from the broad philosophical viewpoint and therefore, I was unable to answer your technical-based question

18. I am philosophically oriented to the realm of ideas; I respond to the sweep and scope of great intellects. My work is beyond the interest in petty details and parrot-like memorizing of those who are merely students

19. At the time of the exam, I was suffering from a severe case of cognitive dissonance and was incapable of coping with the stress of the hour.

20. It is not a higher mark I seek; I care nothing about marks; I think marks are wicked and I disapprove of them. However, this pernicious system of which I am a victim requires marks for achieving success and therefore, I seek a higher mark.

Thank you,

GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY!

My philosophy professor and I had an unspoken agreement. I wouldn't tell if he wouldn't. LOL The mores of society affect thought and action more than enlightened philosophy. With social work I'm sure you see it every day. People are conditioned by their environment. Which brings up the question, how ya doin these days dude? LOL

Glad to hear it. That sounded like a nasty spill you took earlier. Things like that can linger sometimes. As for me, everything is doing pretty good (knock on wood).

just got up,wheres me coffee

If you've got melted chocolate on your hands, you're eating it too slowly.

Diet tip: eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It will take the edge off your appetite,
and you'll eat less.

Is there life before coffee?

How have you "bean"?

Coffee is Monday morning's best friend.

It's time to get away from the daily grind.

Allow me to "espresso" myself.

You're the cream in my coffee.

Where's my coffee? I'd be unstoppable if I could just get started.

Coffee - the breakfast of champions.

A little cup of friendship
With coffee in a mug
It warms you up inside
Just like a personal hug
Remember as you drink,
The good times and the smiles.
We'll always be together
Though separated by miles

At my table sit with me,
I'll pour coffee or some tea.
Perhaps we'll share our tears and laughter,
and be friends forever after.

We've shared coffee and a chat
As friends so often do,
So when you brew this single cup
Imagine I am there with you!
A cup of coffee to say thank you
For all the things you've done,
And wishes that the day will bring
Happiness and fun.

MySpace blocks Photobucket videos
April 11, 2007 8:45 AM PDT
Add to your del.icio.usdel.icio.us Digg this storyDigg this

Social-networking giant MySpace.com on Wednesday began preventing Photobucket videos and mashups from being uploaded to its pages.

MySpace will no longer let its users post videos from Photobucket in their profiles, blogs or comments section. MySpace said Photobucket had violated MySpace's terms by encouraging users to post advertisements in their videos.

"We spoke to the company about their actions, but they refused to respect our community's terms," MySpace said in a statement. "We had no choice but to disable their service."

In a statement on its site, Photobucket expressed outrage and encouraged users to demand MySpace to reverse its decision.

"MySpace is contradicting the very belief of personal and social media," Photobucket said. "By severely restricting this freedom, MySpace is showing that it considers you as a commodity, which it can treat as it sees fit...Vote with your feet and your keyboards. Tell MySpace how you feel."

Photobucket, a photo- and video-sharing site, has seen enormous growth in the past year, with much of it coming from MySpace users.

In a story last month, experts predicted that Photobucket might be vulnerable to a decision by MySpace to block users from using the company's tools.

Good morning all! A cold, wet day in Philly. I splurged and took a cab to the office; the driver was a south philly Italian ... all of whom sound like Sylvester Stallone. The cab has to drive itself as south philly Italians need both hands to talk so I just take off my glasses and hope for the best :)

Windows XP to be phased out by year's end despite customer demand

"Computer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite strong ongoing demand for the OS. Analysts and computer makers are wondering if the move is premature given Vista's ongoing performance and compatibility issues. Dell recently said it would reintroduce XP on a range of machines due to customer demand but Microsoft will only allow this until the end of the year."
