ps2 serious problem - vertical colored bars

A friend of mine told me had a ps2 that wouldn't read discs, so I figured it was the common disc read error stuff. I told him I'd take a look at it for him. When I turn the thing on, it just goes straight to several opaque vertical colored bars and makes a high pitched noise. It's like it's possessed by the emergency broadcast system or something. I've never heard of this, nor can I find any info about this type of problem. Basically, I'm just asking if anyone has ever heard of this. I'm pretty confident the ps2 is just a paperweight now, but any input would be appreciated.

sounds to me that your friend has played to much it burned something but still turns on or its crashed or the graphic card has shorted out or something burned just buy a new motherboard or new ps2 waht version is it.

It's a version one, he said he got it in the first few weeks the ps2 was released so it's an old one, that's for sure. thanks for the input

go to http://richspsxparts.com/v1.html and if you want to replace the mother board you can buy it from there I've done it before just make sure its a v1 so in other words google playstation version chart or sometin like that and does it have a modchip
