The media you're using and how fast you burn your backup to disk can cause this. To minimize the possibility of this happening try this:

1) When it comes to media, stick to a quality brand like verbatim (mitsubishi chemicals) or Sony DVD+Rs (made in japan).

2) Burn your backups at a 4X write speed

3) Make sure you're not burning too close to the disk's outer edge. Have DVD Shrink (or Nero recode 2) create smaller file sizes of 4300MB. Using DVD Shrink goto: edit-->preferences, in the preferences tab choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.

Three things come to mind - media being used, burn speed and burning to the edge of the disc. What brand of discs are you using? Burn speed?

In shrink you can also set your target size to 4360 so that your aren't burning close to the edge. Go to edit>preferences tab and pick custom - then type in 4360.

On top of the aforementioned advice, I can tell you (from personal experience) that sometimes it's the DVD player's problem and not the DVD itself. I burn about ten movies that would freeze/skip in my old DVD player. I recently bought a new player and those ten discs play wonderfully, not one single problem. So, if your player is older, this might also be something to consider. I have no idea while certain titles were messed up (since all were burned on the same media with the same software), but they were. Hope this might help!

I think the foremost problem is the media. The problem posed sounds like the textbook problems created by cheap media.

But yes, the age of the DVD player is also important. Obviously, the older DVD players will not know what the hell + or - R's are. This is why it's important to get +R's to write them as Rom. Even if you do that however, extremely old players will still not know what a DVD+R written as Rom is.

I don't think this is a +/- issue. Maybe poor quality media, but not format compatibility. I think if a player does not recognize a format, either + or dash, then you could not play the disc at all.

If the playback problem is at the the end, like others suggested, it might be the burn speed/process( too close to the edge), media quality, or just an annoying player, but not a format problem.
I have a Sanyo VCR/DVD combo. That stupid thing doesn't want to play half of the DVDs that I borrow at the college library(it freezes and skips half way through). And I know is a player issue, as my Apex has no problem with that. I never figured that out, as I have no problems with DVDs from the rental place.
