100-gig music players?

p2pnet.net News:- Are 100-gig portable music players on the way?

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) says it's developed a 1.8-inch 100-gig two-platter HDD, based on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR).

The new MK1011GAH, "offers a footprint that is 10 percent smaller than first-generation 1.8-inch drives," says the company.

The drive, with an areal density of 155.3 Gbit/in2, is specially designed for thin and light mobile computers with an 8MB cache, says Toshiba.

Bitch for today; Windows is p>>sing me off with Secuirty Centre pop-ups :#!!
@rav: Here is how you disable the bloody thing (well, at least the popups)

Step One: Open the security center

Step Two: Click on the line that says "Change the way Security Center alerts me"

Step Three: Uncheck all the boxes and click "OK".

You should no longer get popups.

Or you can totally disable Security Center. I can tell you how if you want.

TiVoToGo .tivo to .mpg

p2pnet.net News:- Want to convert a .TiVo file from TiVoToGo to a normal mpg?

Say no more. Instead, download the TiVo File Decoder open source toolkit created to allow you to do just that.

here
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=183716

http://sourceforge.net/projects/tivodecode/

"It's a command-line utility to convert .tivo movie files to normal mpeg files," says PVRblog.

"It uses your own media access key, so it basically mimics what the TiVo Desktop Software does, but goes another step beyond to remove the DRM. This would allow you to view your TiVo recordings on other unsupported platforms (linux, mac) as well as other devices (cellphone video player, iPod, PSP, etc)."

Naturally, you'll need a Series 2 TiVo, observes the post, because, "all the TiVoToGo functionality is turned off on Series 3 boxes".

It's good for, "32-bit MS Windows (NT/2000/XP), All POSIX (Linux/BSD/UNIX-like OSes) ," says Jeremy Drake.

For Macolytes, " Success!" - says an anonymous here, continuing:

I am successfully watching downloaded content on my Mac, without using any sort of Windows solution at all.

Downloaded from the TiVo via the web interface (though I'll probably start using Galleon), decrypted it via tivodecode, and I'm able to watch it in VLC. QT doesn't like the files though.

I was able to use iSquint to convert it to an MPEG4, and now my iPod is playing Robot Chicken

On tuaw.com, "My initial reaction to this was 'WOO HOO!!!', " says Laurie A. Duncan, "but now I'm not convinced that it's worth it.

"Let's face it, TiVo will probably change the DRM to defeat this crack and the more time they spend on that, the less time they will spend on bringing Multi-room viewing (MRV) and TTG to the HD Series 3 and TTG to Mac users in general."

(Thanks, Jazz)

Yeah no problem-o rav. The stupid thing was driving me crazy too so I went on a hunt and found out how to fix it.

My bitch of the day: I can't figure out if I should do a "Burn-in" test or not. I am building my best friend's mom a computer and want to make sure the stuff isn't going to crap out on her (mainly the Corsair Value RAM) a year down the road.

From what I read its a split, some say "do it" some say not to. The system won't be OC'd at all, but I am worried that the Value RAM will have problems as some people have reported.

Would you guys recommend I do a total burn-in (24 hrs. of CPU and RAM burn-in) or just the RAM? Or not at all? I would probably just use MemTest in BIOS if its available, if not then in Windows once I get it installed.

EDIT: by Pop_Smith for grammar errors :p

Free firewalls outclass their commercial counterparts
Posted by l33tdawg on Thursday, December 07, 2006 - 12:09 AM (Reads: 44)

Free firewalls are better than their paid-for cousins. That is the surprising conclusion of a test of desktop firewalls by security researchers. Researchers at David Matousec's matousec.com carried out tests on 21 leading products using 26 assessment programs known as "leak" testers. These simulated a total of 77 test attacks on firewalls, configured using both out-of-the-box and optimal security settings. Each firewall was then awarded points based on its ability to pass each leak test in both modes. The only two products to achieve a rating of "excellent" turned out to be free-to-use software, the Comodo Personal firewall v2.3, and the Jetico Personal firewall v2.0 beta. They scored, respectively, 9,350 and 9,125 points out of a possible total of 9,625, leaving the nearest rivals some way behind. Surprisingly, paying for a product did not seem to make any difference to its ability to stop attacks -- the rest of the results spread the two categories fairly evenly about the scoring. Some paid-for products turned in awful scores.

Adobe Reader is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files on a variety of hardware and operating system platforms.

A 3rd party speedup tool for Adobe Reader is also available. It disables many of the plugins that are not needed. It has an easy to use interface including a couple of speed options as well as restore to default. Download that here.

12-Yr Old Arrested For Unwrapping Present Early ? Idiot Mom Calls Cops
A mother convinced Rock Hill police to arrest her 12-year-old son after he unwrapped a Christmas present early.

The boy?s great-grandmother had specifically told him not to open his Nintendo Game Boy Advance, which she had wrapped and placed beneath the Christmas tree, according to a police report.

But on Sunday morning, she found the box of the popular handheld game console unwrapped and opened. When the boy?s 27-year-old mother heard about the opened gift, she called police.

?He took it without permission. He wanted it. He just took it,? said the 63-year-old great-grandmother.

Waldrop said he was not aware if Rock Hill police have ever arrested a child for unwrapping Christmas presents early.

?Yeah, it?s strange,? he said of the case.

Ya think?
