[quote]Apple hides account info in DRM-free music, too

With great power comes great responsibility, and apparently with DRM-free music comes files embedded with identifying information. Such is the situation with Apple's new DRM-free music: songs sold without DRM still have a user's full name and account e-mail embedded in them, which means that dropping that new DRM-free song on your favorite P2P network could come back to bite you.
We started examining the files this morning and noticed our names and e-mail addresses in the files, and we've found corroboration of the find at TUAW, as well. But there's more to the story: Apple embeds your account information in all songs sold on the store, not just DRM-free songs. Previously it wasn't much of a big deal, since no one could imagine users sharing encrypted, DRMed content. But now that DRM-free music from Apple is on the loose, the hidden data is more significant since it could theoretically be used to trace shared tunes back to the original owner. It must also be kept in mind that this kind of information could be spoofed.

Concerned users could convert selections to MP3, but there will be a generational loss in quality resulting from the transcoding. We also have to wonder: who is buying DRM-free music with the plans of slapping it up on a P2P share, anyway? It's not like there aren't dozens of other ways to get access to music without paying for it.
What would Apple do with the info?

The big question, of course, is what might Apple do with this information? Because it can be spoofed, it's not exactly the best way to determine who is sharing music, and in any case, tracing a link back such as this would leave a copyright holder in a gray area. Embedded data or not, the mere presence of the data in a file found on a share is not an unassailable indicator of copyright infringement.

That said, it would be trivial for iTunes to report back to Apple, indicating that "Joe User" has M4As on this hard drive belonging to "Jane Userette," or even "two other users." This is not to say that Apple is going to get into the copyright enforcement business. What Apple and indeed the record labels want to watch closely is: will one user buy music for his five close friends? The entertainment industry is obsessed with the idea of "casual piracy," or the occasional sharing of content between friends. I wouldn't be surprised if some data was being analyzed in aggregate, although Apple's current privacy policy does not appear to allow for this. As with the dust-up over the mini-store, Apple should clarify what this embedded data is used for.

We've contacted Apple for a response but have not heard back from the company.

Time to torrent DRM-free iTunes?

p2pnet.net news:- Apple is now flogging EMI's DRM-free songs online at $1.30 each, so does that mean it's time to torrent?

Apart from the fact that, thanks to the p2p networks, there's no need to go to the extreme, as TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) observes:

Sure, you can now download music from the iTunes store without DRM but that doesn't mean you should just willy nilly start sharing that music with your friends. For one thing, it's illegal.

For another, your account information is embedded into that m4a music file.

Want proof?

For the technically adept, TUAW post also features a way for you to check it out for yourself.

I misspoke. It was X Copy Xpress (Gold version) that 321Gone was supposed to remove the watermark and info. I only used X Copy gold twice to make discs. I used the Gold X copy Xpress mode to do my first dvds. Did 321gone help there? It must have done something since I was able to copy the copies and the warnings were also removed. Seems like that was ages ago.

Edit: This thread cleared it up for me. And a member actually wrote the program 321gone - PsiDOC!

Also...there should be some "friendly" games. These are just games that are not in any competition, league or cup, so they are just arranged to try new players out or keep the teams experience and fitness up.

Trojan masquerades as I.R.S. e-mail
May 31, 2007 - 2:15 PM - by Digital Dave
I've seen a couple of these already.

Bastards!

Coming on the heels of a bogus Better Business Bureau e-mail last week, criminal hackers have now unleashed phony IRS e-mails. The new e-mails state that an IRS criminal investigation probe has been opened against the recipient, or that a customer has filed a complaint against a company and has asked the IRS to act as an arbitrator. In both cases, the information is false, but to learn more, the recipient must open the attached file. The attached file contains a Trojan that attempts to download and install a keylogger, which then uploads stolen data from the compromised PC.

The IRS requests that recipients of these e-mails forward them to phishing@irs.gov.

billybob, thanks for the info, yeah sure if you can find out if there's a decent match somewhere let me know, anyway, you wanna here another bitch, man thats 2 days in a row for me I must be turning into a little old lady.

There'a this young lady Emma, helps take care of my Uncle, I e-mailed her again last night and said just out of curiosity I hope my Uncle has a shower in the house, cause when I was there back in 65 all they had was a bath, hoping things have changed, but to my dismay she said no, its just a bath, oh man I almost sh%t, she said I'm in for a culture shock at his place, all his place has is just the bare essentials, she said even his toilet still runs on a cistern tank, I bust out laughing I didn't think anybody had them anymore, I don't care about bare esentails that doesnt bother me, but no shower, oh man no way, I told my wife take my ticket and you fly over there lol.

I don't even leave my bedroom without taking a shower, here in Philly it was so hot today I took one at noon and will take another one before I go to bed, it was 90% here today and I refuse to be funky. Emma said in her e-mail and I got a kick out of this, you can go around the corner to me Mum's if you get desperate, desperate I wrote back? I said Emma I can just see your Mom calling you saying this guy comes over the house 2 times a day to shower, he's becoming a real pain in the ass.

I did check Londons weather today, it was a 7 day forcast, every day said rain, should I bring a rubber raft with me lol, it also said highs of 60 and low of 50, I was gonna fly over with a tee shirt and shorts, I don't think so now.

Whatever, anyway really excited to make this visit, heard that things have really changed there since 65, Emma asked me what sites would I like to see, I told her I don't care about any tourist attractions, could care less where the Queen lives just like I could care less where Bush lives, I want to be around regular people, just take me to the nearest bars, oh she said you want to do the pub crawl, lol, I knew what that meant, we call it bar hopping here, I said you damn skippy.

I will have to check my Paypal account and see if I have any extra to donate.

My complaint for the day:

Comca$t sucks big time! I have their high-speed internet, which isn't all that bad but it costs me $50 a month with a $10 discount.

I am doing some small email marketing for an internet company with double opt-ins that I get almost daily.

However, I emailed Comcast about it due to the fact that they seem to be major restrictive on their email policy but I found out this:

You can only send 1,000 (which is more then enough) emails a day before they block your account from sending emails for a 24-hour period. They also only allow you to send an email every 20 seconds before blocking you for 5-10 minutes.

I think this is B.S. because if they are gonna restrict your email sending abilities they need to do one or the other.

Either A: make it so you can send X amount (in this case 1k) before blocking you.

or

B: enable, as they have, a trottle so you can only send emails every so often.

Doing both is lame and makes me want to switch ISPs just because of how much I am paying for service!

Apple criticized for embedding names, e-mails in songs

By Greg Sandoval
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

update It used to be that music fans believed cryptic messages about Satan or the death of a band member were hidden within rock albums.

Nowadays, the secrets buried in digital music are way too easy to find, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). The consumer watchdog group, which focuses on the Web, claims Apple has left information belonging to customers of the new iTunes Plus service exposed. Music purchased from iTunes Plus is embedded with unencrypted customer names and e-mail addresses.

Apple has for a long time included a customer's name and e-mail address within song files purchased from iTunes, according to Fred von Lohmann, an EFF attorney. But the personal information was encrypted, he said. On Wednesday, the company launched iTunes Plus, a service that features music without controversial copy-protection software.

In these songs, names and e-mail addresses were unencrypted, von Lohmann said. He pointed out that data could easily be compromised if an iPod is lost or stolen.

"It's not as bad as losing a credit card number," von Lohmann said, "but it's still information that people wouldn't want floating around out there--especially without them knowing about it."

On Saturday, an Apple spokesman disputed EFF's claim that the company has ever encrypted the personal information embedded into iTunes music. The spokesman said in an e-mail that with DRM tracks, personal information is written in clear text.

Apple hasn't said why the company would leave customer information exposed. But some observers have speculated that Apple is adding watermarks to music files. Watermarking describes the practice of inserting identifying information into digital files so they can be tracked. Privacy groups frown on such practices, but von Lohmann doubts that these were Apple's intentions.

"I think this is just classic carelessness," von Lohmann said. "They have been embedding information for some time. I think nobody went back and noticed this information on iTunes Plus was in the clear."

Mike Goodman, a Yankee Group Research analyst, argued that watermarking is "certainly better than digital rights management.

"Watermarking does not treat the consumer like a criminal," Goodman said. "DRM is also restrictive, telling you how many times you can play a song or which device it can be played on. Watermarking works on the assumption that a consumer is innocent but provides the industry an opportunity to catch someone that breaks the law."

Ars Technica and Tuaw earlier reported on the personal information within iTunes' music.
