Version 12s(SCPH-70012) have SERIOUS issues with the laser. Stay clear of that. If you want a slim go for an SCPH-70001 or SCPH-75001. If you want a fat, anything from Version 1 to 7 is fine. No Version 9 or 10(SCPH-5xxxx with or without date codes 3D or 4C.), as those have laser problems too. But, avoid SCPH-70012 slims AT ALL COSTS. Those have the worst lasers ever put in a PlayStation 2.

its not SERIOUS as you make it seem. If you use good media you'll be fine, but get a laser fix for that tho, i still havent.

Okay, maybe I was a little too harsh, but still, ANY PROBLEMS WITH A LASER IS A BIG DEAL FOR ME. Either way, if on1yalad wants a Version 12 slim or a Version 9/10 fat, if he gets the laser fixes available for them, he's fine.

to play back ups you will have to mod it.
a good chip and laser fix and you would be fine. But for the price of that system, the chip, the laser fix and the install and shipping of everything you could go out and buy a new premodded system instead. here is a break down
system $100, good modchip $50, laser fix $10, shipping about $15 each way, Install from $35-$50 TOTAL $225-$240

A new premodded V12 you can get with the chip and laser fix for about $265 or under depending on where you buy it

If its a V12 you for sure need to have a fix put in it. The comsoft V4 fix is a very good solution and wont take power from the laser like the summone fix does.

I have a v10 and by the looks of what you guys are saying especially Ace_2 my PS2's laser is crap. But I've had it for almost 2 years. I forgot when I bought it. It's still working normally with no problems. Will I see some major or minor problems soon? And if I will does anyone have a link to somewhere that sells the PS2 laser fix. Thanks.

yes, the slimtool/Magic Switch/Ghost Switch
or clip on mod as you say, plus a set of Swap Magic discs
that would be all you need.

It is not the best way to go, but the choice is yours to make.

Maybe only for the Version 13, but I have not heard of laser burnout problems with a Version 14.

no, with the V13/14/15 you need no laser fix at all.
