I have a NEC DVD + - RW ND-6650A DL burner in mt laptop and would like to booktype it to dvd - . I have tried the different tabs in decrypter and various other programs I have but still fail in my goal. I've googled for solutions and the onlt thing I found was at the end of this link http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/. I'm not sure which one to use as most of the page is greek to me. Help is appreciated. Also would like to know how to find out what version of firm ware I have as well as need. Thanx

the firmware page show there is no firmware update for your drive as of yet! and about booktyping...... I would booktype to a DVD-ROM not a -R! Most players will play a DVD-ROM that's the reason why you would booktype to DVD-ROMs! http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
this will explain about booktyping! Not all drives can be booktyped!

You should be able to change your Booktyping to DVD-ROM using DVDDecrypter, Nero, DVDInfo Pro..... just some programs that would do the job for you. But you are the first that I know of that wants to change your booktyping to a DVD-R! I don't know if that's possible or even wise! DVD-ROMS are more acceptable to players that's why they have booktyping for DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs can't be booktyped at all! So there's your answer.

Your NEC will not booktype on its own you will need to get the modified fw to get this feature to work. You are on the right track with your google, CDFreaks has a lot of threads devoted to NEC drives and how to flash to get it to booktype.

Just as a disclaimer, flashing is always a risk and sometimes you cannot recover from a bad flash. Also, using modified fw will void your warranty. Just so you know.

To figure out what fw you have use NeroInfo Tool if you have it, or DVD Decrypter will also tell you just go into Tool/Drive/Capabilities.

@ IHoe,

You're right. I was tired when I posted. dvd-rom IS the way to go. And, that is my intention. I've tried with decrypter several times and it keeps failing. Got the firmware version though (1.23). I can't figure out how to change to dvd-rom with nero either. I'll try to get a hold of dvd info pro and try that. Thanks for the responses. And arniebear, thankyou for the reminder.

So I got dvd info pro and it tells me that dvd+r dl has been set to dvd-rom. Good. However I would like to make the 4.7 gb discs dvd-rom as well. Also it tells me I have command version 2 and need 4 for complete bitsetting capability. Hmmmmm... Greek again.

@ travalon
To change bitsetting in Nero open up Nero CD-DVD Speed, then click on "extra" up at the top and there among the dropdowns you will see the "bitsetting" option....

@ LABOY thanks found it under "test drive" but I still don't get the option to set the 4.7"s. Dl are already set to dvd-rom. Thankyou though.

travalon,

Read arniebears post. You will need modified firmware in order to bitset DVD5 media. He even gave you a link to the f/w.
