I just rename them to .mpg files and this usually works for me.

What do you mean by editing? If you just want to cut some from the start/end, you can do that by loading them in DVD Shrink or Nero Recode. You can also do editing using VobBlanker. No need to convert to any other format.

I want to be able to rip the footage off a dvd then be able to import it into editing software so need to somehow make the .VOB files into something useable in the software (.mpg, .AVI )

I'm using Final Cut Pro to edit footage.

Will try and just rename the files to .mpg and see if that works.

Thanks Keith

Have tried renameing the .VOB files to .mpg .AVI and .mov and none will import into the editing software.
Any more assistance would be appreciated.

Do the mpegs play with windows media player or your DVD playing software (Power DVD, WIN DVD)? It won't work with .AVI, because the files are not avis.

This works for me when I rip with Decrypter and rename the .VOB files as .mpg files. Then I open them with Ulead DVD Workshop, Ulead DVD Movie factory, Nero Vision etc. I usually do this with the home movies I transferred from my VHS to the set top DVD recorder. These mpeg files are recognized in windows and will play on the media player or WinDVD even before I edit them.

If windows is not recognizing the renamed mpg's then there's a problem. Search for a video converting utility and try that instead. The copy protection has definitely been removed?

You don't need to rename the files or whatever, if you just want to play them.
You can go to the guides page, and there you will find software that can convert DVD to AVI, mpeg...But you will have loss in quality

Did you try vobBlanker?

..just wanted to let you know that I tried this with a regular DVD..a copy-protected one. I ripped it with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. I renamed the VOB to mpg. The video played fine with windows media player and Power DVD. When I tried to import it to Ulead DVD Workshop, Ulead crashed. I then tried to import it into Nero Vision it worked, but the audio was missing. So it is not 100%. A friend of mine does the same thing and sometimes the audio doesn't work right. When this happens she uses Mpeg to VCR to save the VOB as mpg (or other choices). She says that usaully fixes the problem. I never had this problem with my home-recorded movies.
