I used both Verbatim CD-R's and DVD-R's with my system. I had excellent results with the CD-R's. I got them at a decent price too.. The DVD-R's I got in a pinch when I had run out of my usual stash of blanks. I normally use a generic brand (Staples - From the Office Supply Store)..

I used the utility to identify the true manufacturer of the Staples Brand and they turned out to be made by Fuji Film and I've never had any trouble with them at all. I burn them on this system with Win98SE, using only the DVD Shrink program and a dual layer Opto-Rite Multi Burner.. I have Nero 6.0, but I only use that for burning CD's and managing audio files and burning data..

Only time I ever had any trouble was when there was a scratch in a Family Guy disc that was too deep and DVD Shrink couldn't read it.. Other then that, no problems.. THe only thing I've heard that wasn't good to do with any DVD backups was to apply labels.. It was too late when I heard that and even still, the labels haven't done any harm.. Verbatim is a decent brand, but there are other brands that are decent too.. You just have to find what works for you and go from there..

Respectfully...

Joe one thing that has happened is the drive does not seem to read Wav Files properly and sees the Files I have written as much smaller almost like small 66 Kb Files instead of say to to three megs??MP3,s
Is there a reason for this..also I use Surething to make CD Labels now it dose not appear to be reading the Title Tracks but Nero Can???
Any ideas??

Those issues appear to be software related. They would have nothing to do with the discs or with the drive. I am confused about the .wav files: they are recorded to CD-R and not to DVD-R, right? Software will often alter files to make them compatible with the format, and DVD-/+R video or data formats are not compatible with .wav files because they are audio CD files.

Paper labels that are designed for CD-R and have a good, stable adhesive are OK as long as they are applied on center and in balance. They may limit ripping from that disc (DAE, or digital audio extraction) at top speed because of any imbalances; but since these discs are mostly used for 1X playback, there is little problem. Paper labels can actually offer a bit more protection to the CD-R's fragile upper surface. Paper labels for DVDs are a bad idea because the expansion and shrinkage of the paper with humidity changes the tilt of the disc and will cause playback problems in the second half of the disc.

Thanks Joe,
Yes the Sure thing is probably software related ,I use the program because it reads Track Lists and saves all that typing if one burns a CD with twenty plus tracks..
I have a Pixma 500 Printer which is enabled to print directly to CD or DVD Ect so I only use stick on labels on CD now and again and know the perils they can cause on DVD-R..
So far I have only burnt 3DVDs but a good few Cd's and have not had any problems..
So it looks as though the Firmware Flash is Good..
Take care and Greetings from Lil Oll New Zealand(twelve thousand miles south east of Australia)....

Thanks Joe I am glad you know where New Zealand is,everyone gets us muddled up with Australia when they see us on the Map and think its just a hop Skip and a jump from the Australian Continent,in fact London is closer to Moscow than New Zealand is to Australia, lol ..
The Sure thing Track Reading process is now working ,it was just a case of Uninstal Reinstall to recognize the Flashed Firmware.
I must start using a better DVD-R too the Imation ones that I am using are made By CMC MAG that don't have the best quality control..
I have another four DVDs to burn so Ill keep you posted on my new Firmwares success..
Cheers and Kia Ora from New Zealand..

I'll bet the Imation discs are perfectly suitable. Many members of this forum condemn CMC and praise Verbatim made in Japan and Taiwan. CMC makes the ones in Taiwan! CMC overhauled its factory in December to reduce contaminants in the production areas prior to manufacturing HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs. I haven't figured out why so many people in this forum (other forums rate CMC as "good") have problems with CMC; but when/if they list their drives, it is almost always an incompatibility issue. CMC makes Imation, Memorex, Philips, TDK, and Verbatim discs with A-grade production. There are other, lesser known brands using a mix of A-grade and B-grade; and that is another possibility for a damaged reputation. I wouldn't worry about Imation product unless you actually have real problems.

a-ha, i've experienced hellish problems with Imation discs over a period of two or more years at work and at home (using various burners); can't remember the details of the discs but we had almighty problems with them and we were only using them for data burning, for work. i was even burning them at work and CRC scanning them at home, and vice versa, lots of CRC errors; my colleague ended up (cus work wouldn't buy anything that didn't say Imation on the packaging) burning 3 copies of every disc he needed to make, and verifying them on of of our Unix machines. we could always tell he was doing the verify as our messages files would spew out errors. Eventually we switched to decent discs, zero problems since then, our customer bills are now written correctly and the data can be retrieved without fighting thru all the corruption. That was enough slap-upside-the-head i needed to avoid Imation like the plague.

Princo is an unlicensed manufacturer of optical media. I am not sure what the quality is of their discs. Imation has a large share of U.S. government work with their tapes and optical media, and that share has been stable for the last four years or so. If two out of three Imation discs have uncorrectable errors immediately after recording, I would suspect bad packaging and look for damage on the disc or figure that the discs are not compatible with the drive I was using.

creaky,

What if you sent them back to Imation to ask what's wrong with them? It would be interesting to find out what they have to say. Imation has tons of test equipment from the 3M days and lots of optical expertise, and they owe their customers answers rather than a quick replacement of the same type of disc that failed. (Isn't it strange that some companies replace incompatible discs with new discs having the same incompatible MID code? What are they thinking?)

i hear ya, but we already wasted too much effort on those 'things' i mean disks, for far too long. These big companies couldn't give a rats ass about quality/consistency, God help us when Bluray or whatever media comes along, wonder how long it'll be before we get decent/consistent quality. I somehow doubt it judging by the lottery we all keep going thru with blank DVDs. it's farcical that we all have to even debate blank media so much, the problem can surely only get worse with the newer technologies.
This is my own opinion, but at the end of the day, any of us should just be able to pick up any old tub or pack of blank discs off a shelf in any old shop and provided it has a brand name we recognise, the discs should just work. In my little world (!) the only discs that should give us trouble are discs that have a dubious or unheard of brand name. <rant over lol>.

plus just noticed, i don't mean to continue the Imation thing as this was about Verbatim made in Taiwan :)
