I recently puchased some Sony's from Staples. One was MIJ's 8x speed and one was MIT's 16x speed. Why is it that the 16x speed only records at 2.5x speed. This is the same thing that happens with these Verbatims i have also that are 16x speed they also will only record at 2.5x speed. The Sony MIJ's that are 8x speed record at the max speed. Why does this happen when the label say 16x speed but only records at 2.5 x speed.

Sounds to me like your firmware's out of date ... In other words, your burner is having trouble recognizing the newer (16x) media ...

What is the make and model of your burner? And, what firmware are you running?

Nero will tell you (click on InfoTool) .. or you can use DVD Identifier (up at the top where it identifies your drive)
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

You can also use VSO Inspector

The latest firmware for the NEC ND-2100 retail version is 1.92. This drive is a +R/+RW recorder that can record up to 8X on some-write once discs. If your drive is limited to 2.4X, either the firmware needs to be updated or, if there is no update for your version because it is an OEM-based drive, the drive is stuck at the default 2.4X speed. In the latter case, recording at slow speed on highly sensitive 16X dye has the potential of problems in the future because the marks may have indistinct edges due to overburning. Drives are so inexpensive today that you might want to consider a new dual-format drive capable of 16X recording. 4X and 8X discs are being phased out by somewhat less stable 16X discs. That's "progress."
