Ummm... what linux is it. Is it the linux that sony made or a free source like Debian, SUSE, Gentoo etc.. If it's a free source you can't run it no matter what. If you have the sony version use DVD Decrypter or Alcohol 120% to burn it.

If you have blackrhino linux image burn it to a cd and load it up with whatever mod you have, make sure you have a USB mouse and keyboard and your hdd already attached. If you have the sony linux disc you need to either have a modchip with auto ATAD patching, or download an already patched version. Burn it to a dvd and load it up with your mod.

i havent modded my ps2, and dont plan on it, there has to be a way to get it on there without modding it, and risk screwing it to no return. DVD 1 image was made using magic iso, and DVD 2 used Nero. There has to be a way to get these to work, and if it doesnt, its gonna make me mad cuz i have a darn 40g hdd sittin in it doing nothing!

There is no other way
You have to have either a real copy of swap magic, a modchip, or if you have a fat ps2, you could try a memory card exploit.

You will have to make at least minor modifications on your ps2 to use any kind of backup.
And don't give me the "but there has to be another way" speach, there ain't one.
I've been messing with modded ps2's since the first modchips became available, and those are the only 3 ways of booting a backup.

And trust me, those are cheap solutions in comprison to getting the original ps2 linux kit.
(not to mention the fact that those are harder to come by every day)

yea, well some ppl dont know how to mod, so honestly it isnt an option, thanks anyway!
Whats the memory card exploit by the way?
and if moddings the only way, what do u recommend thats really freakin cheap, and there will be on chance of messing anything up, and ensuring i can still play ps2 games!

Since you want to use a hd for the linux, so you'd either spend a bit of money on swap magic, with a fliptop or slidecard, and hdloader or hdadvance, which would alltogether add up to about 60/80 dollars, or 50/70 euros.

You could better spend an equal amount of money on a proper modchip like the matrix infinity or 1 of the DMS Pro chips, which will boot those copied discs and let you manage your hdd without extra software.

The memory card exploit would need an Action Replay max (40/60 dollars/euros), and some work (there is a thread on memory card exploits in this forum, just look for it or use the search)

As you can see, there are no real cheap ways of doing this, and imho, the linux kit for the ps2 isn't worth that much effort.
My brother has it, and it's use is very limited, and only interesting if you are a true linux enthusiast.

alright, first ill try the memory card exploit! if that fails, i might just try modding my ps2(not looking forward to that). Once i get linux installed, I can run X windows instead, well thats my goal anyway. Thanks for the help
