I opened a spare spindle of Sony-TYs, the 8x-dvd-rs...to use in Emerson
DVD-VCR combo. Burned prob 200 of them, they are excellent disks. But this spindle, they act funny. Clean, shiny, new nothing notable-but dvd-bounces them witha "Cannot record on this disk" error. Never got that from a TY disk. So I think, ? static? Wipe the disk across my t-shrt sleeve, pop back in recorder, works perfectly. Anybody heard of this? The verbatims (and the maxells I use sometimes) work without a hitch. And these do also, after I give them the 'wipe' LOL
They dont feel 'clean' when I wipe them off either, almost slightly sticky, though I havent actually touched a finger to the record surface of any of them. No didnt spill dr pepper on 'em either.
They finalize and playback just fine after I burn them.

CharlesAB- weird indeed - Never heard of that particular problem before . But sounds like you may have the answer with Static electricity as you mentioned ! I have a possible solution that might help! There is a product called (STATIC GUARD) that you can buy at your local store ! it's made to keep your clothes from wrinkling & clinging due to Static electricity! Though I have'nt used it in a DVD media context I have used it on Vinyl Records back in the day as they say ! & it appears to be fairly benign ! The only Caveat I would give is Only due one or two disc to try it 1st. and don't go crazy a light sparay should do! A safe way to check whether or not it will gunk up uyour media is spray a little of it on a mirror if it leaves a residue then I would'nt use it at all ! You can also use this same test to check your cleaning solution - what you clean your DVD's with ( 91% Isopropyl alcohol is good ) if it leaves a residue on the mirror it'll do the same to whatever media your cleaning ! if it does'nt then your in CharlesAB ! Good luck with the Problem & let us know what you find out ! happy Burning CIAO!

Lol, thanks, I really havent had the thing long enough to have any DVDs that need cleaning-Im paranoid as the Monk about keeping my machine and disks clean and away from the dust. Thats why I thought it strange, those dvd-spindles never have the cover off them except long enough to grab another blank, and they seem fairly airtight. Could be the machine just needs cleaning, or the TY surface is more sensitive to small amts of dust, or static.
Roger onthe vinyl, still got sev thousand of them to keep clean too.
PM if you start looking for anything, I'm beginning to think I need to
lose some of them, Im running out of space!

CharlesAB- I know the feeling - Vinyl in the closet ! CD & dvd racks in the living room ! Cd racks in the computer room ! Cassettes inumerable in the shed Both recorded & blanks ! And enough Blank Media in the CDR & DVD formats to Start a library ! in the computer room /Sanctuary /Fortress of solitude ! So I know where you are coming from ! In any case My friend good luck & hope it sorts itself out eventually ! happy Burning!

Charles,

If the Emerson is a model EWR 10D4 or a EWR 20V4, it is a recorder made by Funai and unsupported by Emerson. (This same model is sold by Sharp as the DV-RW350). Wal-Mart sold many of these recorders with the claim that they are suitable with 4X and 8X DVD-R discs, but that is only true if the firmware was updated to allow 8X--and most were not. If your recorder is one of these models, you have to go to the Funai website to order a free CD-ROM with the firmware update on it. By hitting a couple of keys on your remote control, the machine will allow the disc to be inserted and updated for 8X DVD-R discs. When 16X discs finally replace 8X, though, you may not be able to update your recorder; and you will be stuck.

You can contact Emerson/Funai at this address: http://www.emersonaudiovideo.com/support/contactsupport.aspx

I am not familiar with the Emerson model 20V5, but the symptoms you described are exactly like the problem with 8X discs on older recorders that need a firmware update. I suspect the same thing is true for your model, but check with Funai. Don't throw your Sony discs away--there may be nothing wrong with them at all. See if there is an update for your recorder first; and, if so, the discs will work.
