I am having problems connecting to the internet with my PSP via my wireless router.

I have read loads of posts and feel I am following the instructions well enough, but when I go to test connection the signal strength is only at 1%.

My PSP is right beside the router,
Note:- I have a laptop downstairs that is connected

Please advise if you need more info, thanks in advance for your help

The really frustrating thing is that when I scan for the access point to be used it finds my router no problem, shows me the SSID no. and it states the signal strength is 100%.
I know the WEP No. and enter it.
I also enter the IP address settings, subnet Mask, default router and primary DNS No.s, all of which I got from the Start / Run using cmd then ipconfig.
Proxy server is set to do not use.
Internet Browser is set to Do not start, review my settings, save them, then test the connection.

It advises that the signal strength is at 1% and the internet connection failed.

If i try to do a network update using the settings menu on my PSP, it states "Checking please wait" for a few seconds then states "Connection to the server failed A DNS error has occurred (8041040F).

please help, thanks in advance.

check the wireless lan settings make sure your 802.11 is not just on b make it b+g

scratch what i just wrote, if you were able to get it connected your getting the dns error its your dns numbers where you getting them from?

If your pc internet is same router as psp then.

Right click on your internet connection go to status, then click support tab and check the dns

I chave ran throught the thread you advised for the last 45 mins, no joy I'm afraid.

I can get into my router status.

It states the following:

IP address 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
DHCP Server 192.168.1.254
DNS Server 192.168.1.254

I have entered these into my PSP on the Custom address settings as follows.

IP address 192.168.1.64
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Router 192.168.1.254
Primary DNS 192.168.1.254
Secondary DNS 0.0.0.0

Thanks in avance for your help.

make sure you turn off your wireless encryption for now, till you get it working
the ip you entered into your psp is wrong
if your routers ip is 192.168.1.64
then your psps ip cant be the same number it ie
it would be 192.168.1.(another number between 1-254 but not 64 which yout router has used)

for your default gateway/router you use the routers ip

Start run- cmd - "ipconfig"
use the default gateway ip thats your routers ip

as for dns go to start -run cmd - type in " netsh int ip show dns "
thats your dns numbers

OK,

I have switched off the WEP,
Changed my IP address to 192.168.1.50 (50 = random No. between 1-254 but not 64).

Default router is set as per IPconfig: 192.168.1.254
I typed in " netsh int ip show dns " and entered the No. 192.168.1.254 for which it stated primary only (This is the same as the default router No.)

YES, I now have 100% signal strength, but when I try to connect it states a DNS error has occurred (8041040F)

is this anything to do with the fact the DNS and the router IP are the same.

Much thanks for your help

Default Router 192.168.1.254
Primary DNS 192.168.1.254
why is your router and dns the same?

Are you using a MODEM /router in one?

or do you have a modem connected to the router?
If this is the case then you go get the DNS from inside the modem

I'm not sure,

My ISP is AOL, they supplied me with a Speedtouch 576 wireless router which is connected to my PC via an Ethernet cable.

I wemt into the properties of the router via the control panel, when i check the details there my the DNS server No. and the router Gateway No. are the same (192.168.1.254) it mirrors the same No.s that i also see in DOS using ipconfig and netsh int ip show dns.

I have a Sony Viao laptop that is connected to the internet wirelessly with no problems.

Thanks

Ive never seen that man the router and dns be the same.
Anyways have you tried the automatic settings?

The defualt gateway should by your routers ip
if your router ip is 192.168.1.64
then that would be your default gateway

Are you sure that is your routers ip?

Go to internet explorer and type that ip in the address bar it should take you to your router if its your routers ip.

Hi,

I typed the following Default Router No.(192.168.1.254) into internet explorer and it did take me to the Home page of my router.
So that is definately the default Router No.

I typed in " netsh int ip show dns " using Start / Run it states:

Configuration for interface "Local area connection"
DNS servers configured through DHCP: 192.168.1.254
Register with which suffix: Primary only

This is the same No. that takes me to the router home page on internet explorer.

Foe convenience here are the No.s that it states when I look up the modem details via the Status option.

IP address 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
DHCP Server 192.168.1.254
DNS Server 192.168.1.254

Thanks

It because of the DHCP server your running its going thru thr router for your DNS.
Go into your router and try disabling the DHCP server under LAN setting/config

Then do the dns & ip check again

I went into the advanced tcp/ip settings, Ican see that my DHCP is enabled, but I dont have the option to disable.Add Edit and Rmove are all shaded.

I am using XP

I did go into the DNS address tab on the tcp/ip, and I tried to put in the DNS no. you suggested on the other thread you advised."http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/319233"
67.171.70.72, after i did this I lost my internet connection and my post. I undone this and I got my internet back.

IP address 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
DHCP Server 192.168.1.254
DNS Server 192.168.1.254
i dont understand how your getting this

IP address 192.168.1.64 (is this your routers ip or your computers ip)?

try entering these into the psp

ip 192.168.1.250
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS 192.168.1.254

Make sure your WEP is off

If it doesnt work try
Setting the ip automatically
and then set the DNS manually entering 192.168.1.254

Hi,

I entered the settings as you suggested.

IP address 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
DHCP Server 192.168.1.254
DNS Server 192.168.1.254

IP address 192.168.1.64 Is definately my computers ip, and 192.168.1.254 is definately my routers ip as this takes me to my router on internet explorer.

My WEP is off, I hae tried setting up the IP automatically but it just times out.

I dont know how many possible options I have left, I feel about ready to give up,

cheers for the help

try entering these into the psp

ip 192.168.1.250 (NOT 192.168.1.64)
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS 192.168.1.254

If your comp is using a wireless connection as well turn it off and try get the psp setup first

Hi,

I had already tried that previous to your suggestion.

Thanks for the advice anyway.

Looks like I'm going to sack it mate, spent far too long on it, if I want to explore the internet I will just use my PC. Shame :-(

Thanks.

hard luck mate, if you ever get inspired to try again and do get it working tell us how im intrigued as to what it could be.
One last thing i forgot is ive been told some routers need you to enter the psps mac address into it, to find mac address go to settings - system settings - system information.

Hi I have just got myself a speedtouch 576 from Aol and was trying to set up my PSP through it and have got it sorted.

I found this post when i was having problems and since i found the solution i thought i would post it for you just incase you are still looking to get it sorted.

There is a button on the front of the router that is not labled. You push this for 2 seconds and it get the router to open itself for searches. You then go to network settings in PSP and create a new connection and ask it to search for connections. If you have WEP set up then that is all you will need is to enter the WEP password. and it will get the rest of the settings itself.

I hope this brief answer helps you and if not just ask and i will try to write up a longer step by step guide.
