I know this may create invite quite a bit of controversy but hey, what the hell?

For me as far as paid: Clone DVD2 & Any DVD. Trust me worth the $$$!

Free Stuff that I still use that works: DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter & DVD Fab Decrypter. I've been able to copy everything for the past 2 years with the above. Over 800 movies & counting.

it really isn't necessary to pay. I use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and I haven't had any problems.

The only non free program I recommend is AnyDVD by slysoft.Majority of dvd ripping programs have a lot of trouble with the newer sony arrcos encryption. AnyDVD is updated quite regularly. A lot of the freebies like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter aren't updated anymore, and have trouble with some of the newer encryptions.

Anydvd runs in the background. No extra steps. You don't even realize it is doing anything as long as you see the little red fox icon in your lower utility tray.Slysoft also produces clonedvd/clonecd. They have a discount for us afterdawn members for $5 off each program,$20 if you buy all 3 or 4.Just go into software/rippers for AnyDVD.It'll take you to that site and enter this code: afterdawn

Clonedvd?/nero/roxio/sonic cannot remove encryption, but with AnyDVD-encryption issue is solved!

Rip and burn on the fly? It can be accomplished, but you'll need 2 drives and a background ripper like AnyDVD.

Now if you got AnyDVD,then good old free DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are excellent. DVD Shrink is a ripper and compression program. DVD Decrypter is also a ripper, and a burn program.

If you happen to have nero6 or higher, then you can use DVD Shrink to autoburn for you, making it simpler after you get all those targets and settings correct. You can also autoburn with DVD Decrypter and CopyToDVD.

For single layer backups, with compression: I rip with DVD Shrink and autoburn with Nero.AnyDVD may have to be activated on the tougher encryptions.

For Dual layer backups: No compression is needed,so I use DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write. 1 program for dual layer backups!

I've burned thousands and believe me:
The free stuff like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter is well worth it. Top quality,in an affordable price.Don't let the price fool you. They may be old,updated-but still put out quality backups just like the high dollar programs do.

Dvd fab decrypter+vob banker+shrink+nero= best free combo.
*Vob banker is only needed if shrink wont analyze.

Clone2+any dvd= best combo

I agree with saugmon , The only program I have ever paid for is Any DVD. I have over 600 movies that I have backed up and twice I have used VOB Blanker (also a free program)Any DVD is well worth the price even with no discount.

Best Backup Programs? There are a few, but we're all entitled to our own judgment and preferences. Most of the ripping tools I used are free, except DVD-RB Pro, CCE SP and Nero Premium. Below is what I prefer and use it on a daily basis for all of my dvd backups.

<><> Best Quality <><>

- DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP
- Nero Recode 2 (AA + HQSR)
- DVD Shrink (DA + AEC)

Some may argue, but it is in the eyes of the beholder. Furthermore, it depends on how big is your HDTV.

<><> Best FREE rippers <><>

- DVDFAB Decrypter (one of the best FREE ripper ever)
- DVD Decrypter + PSL plugins via PgcEdit
- DVD Decrypter alone

<><> Best craps/junks processing tools <><>

- VobBlanker
- FixVTS

i have clonedvd2 but i almost never use it, because although together with anydvd, it is able to backup any movie outthere, i prefer Recode2's picture quality. even if it takes a third or fourth step(FabDecrypter,VobBlanker) to do the job.
Rebuilder/HC will produce the best picture quality but it takes my little system from 5 to 6 hours to encode a movie so, Recode2 is the best second option. simply put, Recode2 rules.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

To the average Joe who is watching a backed up movie, I doubt if they can tell or are even concerened if the picture quailty is a fraction better. While you're spending 5-6 hours to backing up a one movie, I'm cranking out 15-20. To each his own & everyone on the sight has their personal favorites.

got to respect your point. It takes recode2 45 minutes in my system usind deep analysis and AEC. that is not so bad and the picture quality is great.
p:s: it is hard to say anything bad about clonedvd2. it is a good program. i have always said that if clonedvd2 were to do deep analysis and AEC, it would be the best transcoder outthere.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

I'm still learning a lot about this but I have become very familiar with DVD Shrink but lately I have had some problems with some skipping and freezing in my backups. This happened with Napoleon Dynamite and Cursed. I used only DVD Shrink to back up the original movies. Can anyone tell me what I could use with DVD Shrink to prevent this assuming my media and the original movie is not creating this problem.

Alkohol and Saugmon have got you covered! AnyDVD is an awesome proggy and worth every cent! I used to use it with decrypter and shrink constantly with no problems. After buying CloneDVD2 and the slow price drop of dual layer Verbs I seldom use shrink. Picture quality has never been an issue for me on my Toshiba 51" HDTV. I have an upconverting dvd player though, and am not sure if this affects picture quality with compressed discs. Also don't forget to use only quality media such as Ty or Verbatim.

MS Windows XP MCE SP2, Intel P4 3.20 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5600, Seagate 7200 rpm 200GB HDD, Sony SDMHS93 19" LCD, Field Value
Audio Adapter Creative SB0317 Audigy LS Sound Card, Liteon models,SHM-165H6S, 167to6c, All burns exclusively on genuine Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media!

well, as I'm a complete newbie I can happily suggest going for AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. I have used DVD Shrink, DVDFab Decrypter and DVD Decrypter + Nero. I started getting problems with both DVD Shrink and DVDFab Decrypter so purchased AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 and never looked back! It's so easy to use CloneDVD2 and a whizz cutting out the adverts and menus and going straight for the main movie. You can't knock the free programs cos they are great too but I was getting a bit frustrated when things were not working out right. So for me, paying for AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 is well worth it.

I use clone2 and any dvd as well but I think using the free combo fab decrypter, shrink, sometimes VOB banker and Nero is a great start and very informative for nubianzzzz. I spend most of my time playing online poker and for that clone2 and any dvd allow me to spend more time on the tables.

hehehe

well, it really depends on what exactly your looking for, each program has its own features.

the nice thing about dvd-shrink is that you can pick which sections of the dvd you want to compress more than the others, even to what % you want it compressed at, and with 3.2 he's added some new reading features for even better quality. the downside is that it wont work with the newer protection schemes such as across, because of this you'll need a second program, either dvdfab decrypter (free) or AnyDVD (not free).

personally i prefer clonedvd2 and AnyDVD. simply because i only have to go through one step and it has a very good result, however CloneDVD is somewhat clipped down on features in order for it to be newb friendly, but it doesnt matter too much because it covers most peoples needs.

if your a feature fanatic, your stuck with multiple programs. sorry bub but its hard to get good programs for something that can be considered illegal if not done correctly (only under fairuse is it *technically* legal to copy dvds in the USA). the further and further these freeware programs get it wont be long before some of them pass up the pay for stuff, sadly some of it doesnt get updated much (if at all) especially the good ones (such as dvdshrink and dvd decrypter).

in all honesty, it's not really needed to get AnyDVD and clonedvd2. IF you know what your doing you can use dvdfab and DVD Decrypter + burning/transcoder of your choice to copy ANY dvd, even those with pesky protections. however it is MUCH easier with CloneDVD 2 and anydvd
