The following story of my problem is a little on the long side. ok. I used to have a slim ps2 and didn't have any problems with it until recently. I have swap magic for it, the one that requires the little black pieces and because of the black pieces my lid wouldn't close all the way without a few tries. Also, I bought MGS3: Subsistence the day it came out and played it a little. Then I got into the RE Outbreak games I had 'cause a buddy of mine just bought them.
We both talked about how great it would be to have the old style system again so that we could get a HDD for it so the loading times would be quicker and then I remember reading something on this site about HDLoader and became very interested in it. Anyways, even more recently I really started playing MGS3: Subsistence disc 1.
I played up to the swamp area with the croc cap when suddenly the PS2 started making wierd clicking sounds and the the PS2 stopped reading the disc. It was something that kept happening while I was playing the game, but if I took the game out and put it back in when this happend it would work again (and rinse/repeat). Also, when it would stop reading the disc an X'd-out disc logo would appear at the top left of the screen.
Since it was happening so frequently I came here. I read that when the slime PS2 clicks and stops reading the disc that that means the lens is dirty so I got rid of it 'cause I didn't feel like dealing with and it gave me an excuse to buy an old style PS2 off of my friend...along with a network adapter, and HDD. My friend is an extremely trustworthy person and wouldn't (purposly) do me wrong.
The only game I've played a lot of on the old style PS2 is Subsistence Disc 1(in which I just played it 4 hours straight) and other then a little slowdown I didn't have any problems. I died while messing around and it took me back to the title screen and then it took me to the "James Bond-like" opening and towards the end of the sequence the game froze...then it started again for a second and then it jsut gave up and sat there.
So I press the reset button and that wierd x'd-out disc logo appears on the top left and the game doesn't start, but there weren't any clicking noises (though I don't know the signs of "dirty lens" for the old style PS2). I'll clean this one if need be but I'm hoping I won't have to since, thanks to my blockbuster gamepass, I could easily get another copy of the game (shady, I know, but for the most part it is a victim-less crime).
Is my system bad or is my game defective? The game disc hardly has any scratches on it and the ones it does have are not at all deep. Also I thought if the disc was defective that you'd be able to see it on the disc, right? ...and I'm still pretty sure that the lens from my previous system was dirty...but it seems like the game maybe defective as well. Again, sorry for the multiple paragraphs I just wanted to be as thorough as possible so that someone could accurately tell me what my problem is. So if somebody could help me it would be greatly appreciated....greatly...appreciated....

Ohhh, sounds complicated. My guess is that the game might have just been written wrong. Try putting it in a DVD drive on a computer. If can't read it, then it was written wrong(or files are missing. Heh, imagine that.).

i have not done that yet, but i found that on my current PS2 (the old style one) the only time that it seems to have problems loading the game is when getting to the start menu. So from the sounds of it, it seems that my problem maybe a weak lazer and not a dirty lense. Still, any insight would still be appreciated.

Do you have any other games? If you do and they work fine, then your game is definately defective. If those games work bad too, then your laser has a problem.

yeah, i definately need to do that, it's just that when I really get into a game it's difficult for me to play anything else.
