I hope someone can help me with this one.
I have an Acer Aspire 1640 with DL DVD-+RW and use following software: Nero 6.3.1.0, DVDShrink 3.2, NTI CD & DVD Maker 7.
For some reason I am unable to burn DVD movies. I have tried ripping and then burning with DVDShrink and Nero. All I get is corrupted DVD that neither my laptop nor DVD player can read.
There is however no problem just burning any other random files to a dvd.
The DVD is a Pioneer DVR-K16a.

Any help is much appreciated.

Your Nero is old, I would update to 6.6.0.18. What kind of discs are you using? How fast are you burning? Is your burner's firmware up to date?

That is some sketchy media. When you burn to low quality media, you get discs that will freeze, pixelate, or will not even complete the burn.Get some quality media, like Verbatim,Sony or Maxell Made in Japan.

As for your backup process, what is exactly that you do? If you have Nero and Shrink, all you need is the free DVDFab Decrypter to rip to your HDD, and you should be able to backup the new titles.

I agree with Pete on the software for bypassing the copyright protection. AnyDVD is hard to beat. I go with it because they keep it updated better than the rest. The latest version is 5.9.4.1, but there is a beta being tested, so a newer release will be around shortly. The 5.9.5.1 beta is posted here at AD. The link to Slysoft is http://www.slysoft.com/ . If you want free, the DVDFab Decrypter noted by cyprusrom is there. It's been getting good reviews. AnyDVD is a background driver type software and DVDFab Decrypter is a ripper, so a bit different. AnyDVD now includes a ripper for some of the troublesome (newer) releases that have compliance problems (which sounds a bit like your problem). The AnyDVD ripper incorporates FixVTS which corrects the files for compliance while ripping. In my book spending a few bucks on AnyDVD makes sense. There's a full function trial, so you should at least give it a road test.

That media is one I've never heard of. It usually pays to stick with the known brands with good manufacturers.

Just an added note: Sometimes it does a better job if you use the AnyDVD ripper to rip the files to the hard drive and then open the files in DVD Shrink. Just using AnyDVD or one of the rippers without FixVTS can sometimes leave the files unusable. With some releases, AnyDVD alone in the background can't correct the files for processing in the transcoder software. So, use AnyDVD, if you hit a problem, use the AnyDVD ripper that's included in the package and use the source files from the HD.

Thanks for all the help!

Hopefully just one final question. The movie that I ripped with Shrink was viewable on my PC ( opening the VOB file with WMP ). Is it true that this does not mean that if burn the movie it will work?

Open the source files (DVD or hard drive files) with Shrink. If it does the quick analysis at the beginning, that's a good indicator the movie will transcode, burn and play properly. That's better than opening a single file in WMP. Once you've transcoded and burned the movie, it should play. Normally if there is a problem, Shrink won't transcode and files have to be compliant for the software to burn. I suspect something along the lines of player compatibility if you're running into problems after a successful burn. Check to make sure the media is compatible with the player. Try opening the files in a player such as WinDVD 7 or PowerDVD if you're wanting to check out playability as a complete compilation.

Here's an excerpt from the AnyDVD changes.txt. Note the settings for DVD decrypter. Also note the ripper with FixVTS that processes files for compliance. DVD Decrypter if not set as suggested can cause error messages without a true problem. When I've encountered error messages with DVD Decrypter I've disregarded them and continued on. Since I started using the suggested settings, I've not run into any.

5.9.1.1, 2006 02 15
- Important: When installing this version over an existing
installation, you must reboot your machine. Otherwise the changes
made in the AnyDVD device driver will not have any effect!
- New: Added workaround for DVDShrink / Nero Recode "Out of memory"
error when copying Macrovision RipGuard protected discs with
menus, e.g. "Madagascar" R1 (US)
- New: Error zones on RipGuard/Arccos/PuppetLock protected titles are
now replaced with "valid material". 3rd party tools like DVDDecrypter
will now work better (no more "Pack Header Error" messages - another try,
this time it should really work).
- Note: To use DVDDecrypter with AnyDVD set I/O Model to SPTI or ElbyCDIO.
Set CSS Cracking method to none. Disable checking for structure
protection.

- New: Added "AnyDVD Ripper". This little tool repairs defective DVDs
while copying them to your harddisk. It can be started from the menu of
the AnyDVD fox icon. It can be started as a stand alone application from
the start menu as well, so it can be used even if AnyDVD is not registered
and the trial period has expired.
It is identical to FixVTS (http://www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS/) but instead
of fixing problems "in place" it copies the files to your harddisk directly
from the source DVD. It fixes the problems while the files are copied.
Some DVDs which have severe mastering defects e.g.,
"Menace II Society" R1 (US) can now be copied with all DVD copy tools
(elby CloneDVD, DVDShrink, etc.) Many thanks to the author of FixVTS!
- Fix: Hang after update check with some system configurations
- Some minor fixes and improvements
- Updated languages

I also noticed you said 5.9.5.1. That's the beta. I don't think the sandbox link is working any longer for that download. Some say it may not be working properly. So, it may be a good idea to use the 5.9.4.1 from the Slysoft site till the new release becomes available through regular channels.

I tried the version 5.9.4.1 with DVDdecryter. I also set the DVDdecryter to the setting as you suggested. However, it doesn't work. The Beta version worked for me but only disc 1 not disc 2. Am I doing something wrong? Have you tried to rip the disc 2 of "nua doi phan song." Are there any other methods..

Thanks...

Without being there, I have no idea if your doing anything wron. You can try a different software, DVDFab Decrypter is a freeware ripper that's been getting good reviews. I've not done the disc you're talking about to see what copyright protection is on it. You could copy the info window data from AnyDVD and post it here so we can see. Just to make sure the disc is recordable, you can do a read scan to see if there are any bad sectors. If you don't have the software, the free DVDInfopro will do the job.

After installing DVDFab NeroRecode stopped working. When trying to burn a DVD with Nero I get an error message along the line of " failed reallocating video something".
Tried reinstalling Nero with no luck. I did a restore and Nero is working again.
@brobear it is just strange to me that burning data to a DVD works fine. With movies the DVD is corrupted.

You're getting interference, but I have no idea from where. DVDFab Decrypter should have nothing to do with Nero. I have a bunch of the DVDIdle apps as well as Nero and a bunch of others and no problems like the ones you're having. Did I ask about your having batch writing software such as InCD in the Nero or Roxio's drag to disk? It may be time to let a technician take a look to see what's going on.

Post your Nero log if your burn isn't successful. Maybe one of the Nero gurus can read something from it. Edit out your serial number when you go to post it.

Guess you don't like to follow advice. It was suggested you update your Nero to 6.6.0.18 and try some better media. It sure can't hurt. Don't use the burn at once option. Those may not be the cause, but they'll be eliminated when you get it done.

And so I tried again... I downloaded the upgrade and installed it. NeroRecode does not start anymore. Just the old "needs to shut down" splash screen with the option to send an error report to microsoft.

Remove Nero using Add Remove software in the Control Panel and then use Nero Clean tools. Use all that apply. Run a reg cleaner if you have it. Then clean up your system and reinstall Nero. Sounds like you got some corrupted files with Nero. It happens, that's why Nero has those cleaner tools. Be sure to use the 6.6.0.18 release for your update, if it's still available. There were usable links just the other day posted here at AD.

cyprusrom mentioned in the fifth post that the media in use was "sketchy" and I seconded the motion in the sixth. And what do we find? We may not always get things right, but problem solving is often a process of elimination. You start with the simple and work toward the difficult. Media and making sure the software is set up properly and not corrupted are the first 2 things to address when problems arise. This was the most simple of the lot, use good media. From the code you were using something like the little known Emtec. Try sticking to the better known brands that are selling good media. Hopefully something was learned here. Do the obvious first instead of looking for the solution everywhere else.
