you look at the disc, its says dvd-rom or cd-rom. Also, if the bottom of the disc is blue, its cd. if its silver or gold, its dvd.

so re-copy the game onto a DVD, use good media, stick to Verbatim, Put in your SM to the ps2 then slide after its booted, remove the SM and put in NBA Ballers(copied), then slide back in press X and TADA!!

Its not that hard to figure out. You use the Swap magic dvd for ps2 dvd games, and the swap magic cd for ps2 cd games.

If you already mentioned it before, sorry, but what brand DVDR discs are you using? Its shouldn't take any longer to load the burnt game than the original.
