That's it. DVDShrink just disappears when I click 'backup'.

I've got an ASUSA8NSLI, Athlon64 3200, Sapphire Radeon X800GT and everything seems to be working fine.

This is a very new machine. I've never used dvdshrink before. I just downloaded and installed it today.

If there's an easier way I'll be happy to follow it, but this seems to be the way of choice. Bit hard for a newcomer to follow, though. Expect I'll get there in the end.

But in the meantime everything seems to be going fine, so I click 'backup' and the programme just disappears, without a word, gone!!!

Anyone got any clues what might be happening, please?

regards,

ab :)

abrogard ,
As stupid as this might sound that happens w/ Shrink sometimes when you try to do one of the new Arcoss encrypter movies( info from Shrink site). Rip it first w/ DVDFAB Decrypter to HD and then use Shrink. You can also use AnyDVD if you like.

I never heard of that with the newer encryptions. I'll take Mike's word though. He's good like that.

If it is an encryption, you could also use AnyDVD then.

Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

Mr_Pink,
I had heard of it but could not remember the workaround so I Googled and got that info from their site. It is either that or, bad ram, MOBO, cables etc. Thought we would try the easy route first as I think that is what the problem is

Thanks for the tip. I hope it's not bad ram, mobo, cables or whatever. I've downloaded DVD Decrypter and I'm using that now. It says that the movie used css/cppm.

I'll try some other movies. See if any of them work any better.

There seems to be a bewildering selection of stuff out there. I've got DVD Decrypter, shrink, daemontools, sc dvd copier and AnyDVD already, maybe even more.

Well, definitely more, I've got burn4free for instance. And it seems to be useless and a con...

Do you have any suggestions for the bare, reliable, necessities for this job?

regards,

ab :)

abrogard ,
Since DVDDecrypter has not been updated in a while and will never be ( as Macrovision now owns it ) I suggest you use DVDFAB Decrypter along w/ VobBlanker before Shrink. VobBlanker corrects the structural errors the studios throw at you. You can substitute Shrink for Recode:

Alkohol's Guide:

Since you already have AnyDVD make sure it is the newest version as that now has included FixVTS which does similarly what VobBlanker does. VobBlanker though is more powerful as you can do more w/ it such as blank out the warnings if you want to.

Alright Mike,

thanks, I'll try it your way. DVD Decrypter is now on its third L-EC Uncorrectable Error (whatever that means) and I'm ready to give up on it.

If I were sticking with it should I persevere with retries or hit 'ignore' and miss sectors out?

Is this as you seem to suggest, something to do with the encoding or is it more likely to be a dirty disk (that's why I'm trying to backup, I've got a lot of pretty scratched looking disks)?

p.s.

before I shutdown dvd decrypt I notice it is now on some small file called vts_o1.0.bup - is there any significance that we can benefit from in these different filenames? I mean are there some we can safely ignore or not worry about the processing quality of?

In a similar vein for all the reading of the 'tutorials' for shrink I couldn't figure if I should uncheck all those long listings of foreign languages for the subtitles I think it was...

ab

abrogard,
I think what you are getting is an encryption DVDD can not do or there are scratches on the disk. It might even be a bad mastering press. You will probably need to exchange it for another copy as I do not think any program will copy the DVD is there is errors on it.

The .bup file you asked about is a backup file that the programs have in it. W/in a DVD there are 3 types of files- .ifo, .bup, and .VOB.

If you do not want to view the subtitles in that language then uncheck them. I uncheck them all including English

So it doesn't matter much if the backup file has errors or if I pick 'ignore' when dvd decode is trying to process it?

abrogard,
No. You want ZERO errors on the read. That is why scratched copies cause problems w/ backup. A computer is not as forgiving as a DVD Player.
