You'd be fine with that NEC. It will more than suffice for what you'll be doing with it.
As far as the Dual Layer portion, that also depends on what you'll use as a mod for your PS2. If you plan on using Swap Magic, don't bother with the DL, but if you're heading towards a mod chip, and it supports DL, you might want to think about it.
When you says "work," u mean making a backup that will play on a ps2 right? If that is what it means, I think most new dvd burner will work. I think the problem with old drives that used to work, but doesn't make copy that work now is because of ther drivers are old. I bought a $50 dvd burner 2 yrs a go and all my backups worked. But now none of them work, so I bought this burner http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDi... Amazing, it works. Yet it works w/ 2X, 4X, 6X, 8X, amazing !!!
My recommendation is just buy a dvd burner at the store, don't buy online, so incase it won't work, u can return it anytime. DON"T BUY MEMOREX DVD BURNER !
