This is only loosely connected to DVD Shrink... I have two DVDR burner drives in my computer. Both are Sony 16x drives installed at the same time. One is Drive D and the other is E. The other day I was trying to copy a movie using E to read and D to burn. While using the DVD Shrink open disc command Shrink got hung up on the open analysis mode and would not stop. I had to go to task manager to end the process as nothing else was working to get it to stop. I rebooted my computer since then and have since dubbed the DVD by Decrypter instead using just the D drive. Now, I'm trying to copy some backups I already made, using the E read D burn approach again. Normally, with DVD backups, it takes about 8 to 16 minutes to encode/burn by this approach (with both drives 16 speed, it goes pretty fast). Now, however, E takes about 40 minutes just to do the encoding, D does the burn in about 5 minutes. I tried reversing to do D read E burn and D encodes in about 8 minutes, but then E burns in about 30 minutes. Either way, E is running very slow compared to D now, whereas they used to run the same. What could be causing this slowup of the one drive?

Check and make sure that DMA is enabled for all your drives, here is a guide.

Thanks. I only uninstalled and rebooted on the second drive (E) and it corrected it. What is the difference between the Ultra DMA 6 and 5 and 2, etc. My primary IDE Channel shows 6 for Device 0 and 5 for Device 1. When I check Secondary IDE Channel it shows 2 for both Device 0 and 1. Should they all be a particular number?

Ultra DMA represents a standard for a transfer rates, where DMA stands for Direct Memory Access.

Here are the transfer rates defined for each mode:

Ultra DMA Mode-----Maximum Transfer Rate(MB/s)-----Defining Standard
Mode 0-------------16.7-----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-4
Mode 1-------------25.0-----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-4
Mode 2-------------33.3-----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-4
Mode 3-------------44.4-----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-5
Mode 4-------------66.7-----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-5
Mode 5-------------100.0----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-6?
Mode 6-------------150.0----------------------------ATA/ATAPI-6?(SATA devices)

Each device is designed to operate at it's own transfer rate, that's why you'll see different devices with different modes (0-6), the rates change as manufacturers design their products to operate at higher speeds.

Thanks. If they are both Sony 16x drives, should they both be the same number? Or is it typical for variance between units of the same make and model? If one is coming up 6 and the other 2, can the 2 be manually set to 6 also, or do I need to rely on what the default is for the drive?

If those sony drives are both of the same make and model then they should be set to operate at the same transfer rate. I have two plextor drives (px-712a and a px-716a), one is set to operate at UDMA mode 2 and the other at mode 4, but if they were the same, both would be operating at the same transfer rate. There are two things you can do, first is to set each drive to "DMA if available", reboot, windows will dectect each drive and set it to operate at the mode it was designed for, second is to uninstall the IDE channel the drives are on, reboot, the drives will be dectected by the OS and set to operate at the mode they were designed for. If after using a drive for a while, and you notice that it's DMA mode has changed to a lower one or even switched to a very slow PIO mode 0-4, this could be an indication of an impending drive failure or a high amount of read errors encountered by the drive possibly due to badly scratched DVDs.

Are you sure you are correct in stating the one of the sony drives is set for UDMA mode 6 (mode 6 is a transfer rate used for SATA devices), this seems too high for this burner, mode 2 is the one that sounds correct. Is your hard drive a serial ATA drive (this device would be set to operate at mode 6) and are probably confusing it with one of your burners, the only manufacturer of a SATA burner that I am aware of is plextor.

The one labled Primary IDE Channel shows the higher numbers for device one and two, the Secondary has 2's for both devices. Could the Primarys be my two harddrives, and the secondaries the two DVD burner drives? I'd cut and paste the images from my device manager if someone can explain how it is done.

I'd be willing to bet that the devices set for UDMA mode 2 on your secondary IDE channel are your sony burners and the other two are your hard drives on the primary channel (as I should be). It looks like all is well.

cheers
John.
