16x DVD-r blanks not good for the Toshiba RDXS52

I've been using 8x DVD-r blanks in my RDXS52 and they work great. No problems at all. But 8x blanks have all but disappeared from the shelves here in New York City. They have been replaced by the 16x DVD-r.

No one responded to my question about this so I called Toshiba. According to customer support, 16x DVD-r blanks will not give a reliable burn in the model RDXS52. There is no word of a firmware upgrade. I didn't ask about the model 32 but I would assume the same to be true. I bought my 52 less than a year ago. I just sent an Email to them complaining about this and I suggest other Tosh owners of these models do the same.
